Chapter 8

The towering glass facade of Emily’s corporate headquarters gleamed in the bright, morning sunlight. The natural lighting illuminated the bustling lobby, filled with professionals moving with purpose. Michael Carter practically kicked the revolving doors open, his tailored suit rumpled, his face flushed a deep, panicked red. He ignored the receptionist and marched directly toward the private executive elevators.
He pulled his sleek, silver keycard from his pocket and slapped it against the electronic scanner.
A harsh, red light flashed. The glass security gates did not open.
"What the hell?" Michael muttered, slamming the card against the reader again.
Red light. Access Denied.
"Mr. Carter," a deep, imposing voice resonated behind him.
Michael spun around. Standing there were two massive, heavily muscled security guards in dark suits. They were white American men, their fair skin contrasting with their dark, professional attire. They looked at Michael with absolute, unyielding authority.
"My card isn't working," Michael demanded, trying to project his usual arrogance, though his voice cracked slightly. "Open the gate for me."
"I'm afraid we can't do that, sir," the lead guard stated, his American accent flat and devoid of any respect. "Your employment with this company has been terminated, effective as of 6:00 AM this morning. You no longer have access to this building."
"Terminated?" Michael shrieked, the reality of the word echoing loudly in the busy lobby. Several employees turned to watch the spectacle. "I am the Vice President! My wife owns this company! Get out of my way!"
Michael tried to push past the guard to physically force himself over the turnstile.
The guard moved with terrifying speed. He grabbed Michael’s shoulder, spinning him backward and pushing him firmly away from the gates. The sheer physical strength of the guard made Michael stumble, nearly tripping over his expensive dress shoes.
"Do not touch me!" Michael yelled, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson.
"Sir, you are officially trespassing," the second guard warned, stepping forward to flank his partner. "Ms. Carter left very explicit instructions. If you cause a disturbance, we are to forcefully remove you and contact law enforcement."
"I need to speak to Emily!" Michael pleaded, his arrogance finally shattering completely, replaced by a pathetic, begging desperation. "Please, just call up to her office! Tell her I'm here! Tell her I'm sorry!"
Suddenly, the private executive elevator dinged. The glass doors slid open, and Arthur Penhaligon, Emily’s lead attorney, stepped out into the lobby. He held a thick manila folder in his hands. He walked gracefully toward the security gates, gesturing for the guards to stand down for a moment.
"Mr. Carter," Arthur said smoothly, handing the folder over the glass barrier.
"Arthur! Thank God," Michael gasped, grabbing the folder. "Tell security to let me up. Emily is overreacting!"

"Emily is busy running a multi-billion dollar empire," Arthur corrected coldly. "Inside that folder are your divorce papers, a restraining order barring you from coming within five hundred feet of Emily or your daughters, and a detailed list of the personal debts you are now solely responsible for. Have a nice life, Michael."
Arthur turned on his heel and walked back to the elevator, leaving Michael standing in the lobby, holding the papers that documented his absolute ruin.
