Chapter 12

The luxurious, brightly lit foyer of the penthouse descended into eerie silence as Emily manually engaged the heavy steel deadbolts on the main double doors. She didn't hide in a panic room. She positioned herself behind the solid marble island in the open-concept kitchen, providing her with a clear, unobstructed line of sight to both the main entrance and the service elevator.

She breathed deeply, forcing her heart rate to slow. The pristine white walls and gleaming surfaces felt like a sterile arena awaiting a bloodbath.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the service elevator shaft. They had bypassed the electronic locks and were manually prying the doors open.

Emily raised her suppressed weapon, resting her elbows steadily on the cool marble counter.

The service doors groaned in protest before sliding violently apart. Four heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear poured into the service corridor. They were professionals, moving with swift, synchronized precision, entirely unaware that the billionaire tech CEO they were sent to intimidate was waiting for them with a loaded gun.

"Breach the main suite," the lead mercenary commanded, his voice muffled by a tactical mask.

As the first man stepped past the threshold into the bright, cinematic light of the kitchen, Emily squeezed the trigger.

The suppressed weapon coughed three times in rapid succession. The lead mercenary collapsed instantly, his body armor useless against the precise, armor-piercing rounds Emily had fired directly into the unarmored gaps of his neck and shoulder.

"Contact! We have contact!" the second mercenary shouted, diving desperately for cover behind a heavy oak bookshelf.

The remaining three men returned fire, a deafening roar of automatic weapons shattering the serene, perfect aesthetic of the penthouse. Bullets tore through the expensive plaster, pulverized the crystal vases, and chewed into the marble island where Emily was crouched.

Emily didn't panic. She didn't scream. She stayed low, tracking their movements in the reflections of the shattered glass raining down around her, waiting for the perfect moment to strike back.
