Chapter 2

The bright, cinematic lighting of the room seemed to sharpen, capturing every agonizing detail of the humiliation. Megan’s terrified sobs echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings. The three-year-old buried her face into the fabric of Emily’s trousers, her small frame shaking violently as the cold, greasy broth soaked through her beautiful floral dress. Beside her, four-year-old Olivia trembled uncontrollably, her large eyes wide with shock as she instinctively hid behind her mother.
"Shh, it's okay, Megan. Mommy is right here," Emily murmured, immediately dropping to her knees on the expensive hardwood floor.
She pulled a clean linen napkin from a nearby side table and began frantically wiping the cold broth and food remnants from her daughter’s dress. Emily’s hands moved with practiced, gentle precision, but her heart was pounding a frantic, furious rhythm against her ribs. She kept her eyes focused on her children, refusing to give Jessica the satisfaction of seeing her break.
"Honestly, Emily, you need to teach them not to stand underfoot," Jessica mocked from above, taking a sip from a crystal champagne flute. "They are constantly in the way."
Before Emily could even formulate a response, a heavy pair of expensive dress shoes stepped into her line of sight.
Michael Carter, Emily’s thirty-eight-year-old husband, stepped out from the crowd of onlookers. He wore a perfectly tailored suit, a crisp dress shirt, a silk tie, and an incredibly expensive watch that flashed in the bright light. His fair, rosy face was heavily flushed with alcohol, his eyes narrowed into a cruel, drunken glare. Instead of helping his wife or comforting his weeping daughters, Michael deliberately positioned himself to block their only exit to the hallway.
"Michael, move out of my way," Emily said, her voice remaining low and steady as she stood up, keeping both girls safely tucked behind her legs. "I need to take Megan to the washroom to clean her up."
"You aren't going anywhere," Michael slurred slightly, leaning forward with a viciously dismissive sneer. He gestured vaguely toward the scattered shrimp and broth staining the polished floorboards.
"Your mother just threw food at our children, Michael," Emily stated, her American accent cutting through the tense silence of the room. "Move."
Michael let out a harsh, drunken laugh, completely devoid of any paternal warmth or human decency. He looked down at his own daughters with absolute disgust.
"She dropped a plate, Emily. Stop being so incredibly dramatic," Michael snapped. He pointed a thick, manicured finger directly at the greasy, ruined food lying on the floor in front of Megan’s small shoes.

"Pick it up," Michael commanded, his voice dripping with drunken, vicious authority. He glared down at Emily, fully expecting her to submit in front of his father’s birthday guests. "Pick it up, it's still perfectly good. The girls can eat it right there."
The collective gasp from a few of the more decent guests was instantly silenced by a sharp look from David Carter, who sat comfortably by his birthday cake, thoroughly enjoying the subjugation of his daughter-in-law.
