Chapter 1

The grand reception hall of the Ashford estate was a breathtaking vision of winter opulence, completely flooded with a warm, golden light that radiated from cascading crystal chandeliers. The sheer brilliance of the room chased away the bitter December frost pressing against the tall glass windows, illuminating polished marble floors and intricately carved walnut furniture. Dozens of tall ivory candles flickered gently within heavy glass hurricane holders arrayed along the walnut consoles, their flames casting shimmering amber reflections across the gilded mirrors and burgundy velvet seating. A towering Christmas tree stood majestically at the center of the room, sparkling with golden fairy lights, red ribbons, and delicate glass ornaments. The air was heavy with the scent of pine, expensive perfume, and the quiet, dangerous hum of syndicate politics as elegantly dressed guests mingled in the luxurious space.

At the edge of the room stood Miles Ashford. At thirty-three, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling estate with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He possessed broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored charcoal three-piece suit. His angular jaw was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair, shadowed by a neat, extremely short stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy family signet ring that caught the chandelier’s light. A small, delicate ink design peeked just above his crisp white collar. His fair, rosy skin caught the warm illumination as he surveyed his domain with cold, calculating precision.

"The northern shipping routes have been secured for the winter, Miles," murmured Vincent, a senior capo, keeping his American accent low to blend with the festive strings playing in the background.

"Are you absolutely certain the routes are clear of interference, Vincent?" Miles asked. He spoke slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting through the ambient noise of the room with effortless authority.

"Completely certain, Boss. The rival families understand the cost of crossing you."

"Good. Ensure the perimeter guards are doubled tonight," Miles commanded, his dark eyes scanning the room. "I want no surprises on Christmas Eve."

To Miles’s left stood Brielle Shaw, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a luxurious emerald velvet evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure, her fair skin glowing beneath the golden light. Heavy diamond earrings flashed with every tilt of her head. She maintained a polished, unwavering public expression, playing the role of the devoted, untouchable future wife to absolute perfection.

"Let us leave the talk of supply lines for the morning, gentlemen," Brielle chimed in, her voice smooth, practiced, and carrying a quietly possessive manner. "Tonight is a celebration of our families uniting. Let us enjoy the beautiful peace we have built."

"A beautiful sentiment, Brielle," agreed a wealthy donor from across the room, raising his crystal glass. "To the future of the Ashford family. May your union bring prosperity to us all."

Miles did not raise his glass immediately. He turned his signet ring thoughtfully around his tattooed finger. He had accepted the political necessity of this engagement to secure the Shaw family's loyalty, but a persistent, gnawing instinct told him that something within the walls of his own estate was deeply fractured. His observant gaze drifted across the crowded salon, searching for the source of the subtle disruption.
