Chapter 1

The crowded Christmas reception inside Gideon’s luxurious mansion was a masterclass in calculated opulence. Tiered crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring frescoed ceilings, flooding the entire room with a brilliant, warm golden light that entirely banished the winter chill outside. Ivory candles glowed fiercely inside glass hurricane holders resting on polished walnut consoles, their amber illumination reflecting across the gilded mirrors, the pristine marble floors, and the burgundy velvet sofas where the city’s most dangerous elites sat. A towering Christmas tree commanded the far end of the grand salon, sparkling brilliantly with golden fairy lights, thick red ribbons, and delicate glass ornaments. It was a flawless display of mafia royalty, designed to overwhelm the senses and project absolute, untouchable power.

At the center of this majestic gathering stood Gideon Hale. At thirty-three, he possessed the handsome, imposing presence of a mafia boss who had conquered his empire through sheer, uncompromising will. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp, angular jaw dusted with extremely short, meticulous stubble. His naturally swept-back hair framed a face that commanded terrifying authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with deliberate elegance, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The security arrangements for the new eastern ports are finalized, Gideon," a senior capo named Marcus stated, raising a crystal glass of bourbon. "No one moves a single shipment without your direct approval."

"Keep the patrols doubled until the new year, Marcus," Gideon replied slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting effortlessly through the ambient hum of the crowded reception. "I want no disruptions during the transition."

"Of course, boss," Marcus nodded respectfully. "You should focus on celebrating tonight. Bianca has orchestrated a truly magnificent evening."

Gideon’s dark eyes shifted toward the center of the room. His fiancée, Bianca Drake, was a vision of high-society perfection at twenty-nine. She wore a luxurious burgundy velvet gown that clung flawlessly to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the warm light. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. She maintained a polished public smile as she greeted the syndicate members, but Gideon had long noticed her quietly controlling manner.

"Yes," Gideon murmured, his voice lacking any genuine warmth. "She orchestrated everything perfectly for the optics."

Moving quietly through the periphery of the room was Sophie Ellis. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty, with delicate features and clear, expressive eyes. She wore a fitted black maid dress, crisp white collar and cuffs, a white apron, and a white ruffled headband. She carried a silver tray of champagne, her gaze nervously darting toward the heavy, sliding portrait beside the Christmas tree.
