Chapter 1

Cascading crystal chandeliers flooded the entire interior of the Hart mansion with a warm, golden light. The opulent Christmas reception was in full swing, a dazzling display of wealth and power that masked the dangerous reality of the men occupying the room. Ivory candles glowed softly inside glass hurricane holders lined up along polished walnut consoles. Gilded mirrors reflected the amber illumination across pristine marble floors, highlighting the carved walnut furniture and rich burgundy velvet sofas. Beside the grand staircase, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with golden fairy lights, red ribbons, and delicate glass ornaments.

At the center of the room stood Alaric Hart. At thirty-three, the mafia boss was an imposing, strikingly handsome figure. He possessed broad shoulders that effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit, and an angular jaw shadowed by extremely short, neat stubble. His naturally swept-back, slightly wavy hair caught the golden light as he nodded to his men. Artistic tattoos decorated his hands and fingers, utilizing visible negative space that drew the eye, while a small, intricate neck tattoo appeared just above his crisp white collar. He checked his luxury wristwatch, the heavy family signet ring on his hand gleaming.

"The northern ports are secured for the holiday, Alaric," muttered Silas, his most trusted capo, stepping close to be heard over the string quartet. "No interference from the rival families."

"Are you entirely certain, Silas?" Alaric asked, his voice low and measured, carrying a crisp American accent. "The holidays make men desperate. Desperate men make stupid mistakes."

"My men are on high alert, boss," Silas assured him, taking a sip from a crystal glass. "Everything is running exactly as you ordered."

"Keep the perimeter guards doubled until sunrise," Alaric commanded, his eyes sweeping over the formally dressed guests mingling beside the evergreen garlands and beautifully wrapped presents. "I want absolutely no surprises in my home tonight."

"Of course," Silas said. "And how is the new bride enjoying her first Christmas as the head of the family?"

Alaric’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. He looked across the room at Vivian, his recently married wife. She was twenty-nine, draped in a stunning emerald satin gown that contrasted beautifully with her fair, rosy skin. Heavy diamond earrings sparkled as she laughed at a guest’s joke, maintaining a polished, affectionate public manner. The marriage was a strategic alliance, a cold transaction designed to consolidate power.

"Vivian is performing her duties perfectly," Alaric replied, though his tone was entirely devoid of warmth. "She understands the expectations of this family."

"She certainly looks the part," Silas noted, swirling his drink. "But you watch your back, Alaric. Strategic brides have a habit of wanting more than just the title."

"Let her want," Alaric said smoothly. "I control the board, Silas. Nobody makes a move in this house without my permission. Now, go check on the security detail."
