The luxury penthouse was serene and filled with the joyful sounds of childhood. The shattered glass and bullet holes from the syndicate attack had been entirely repaired overnight by a discreet, highly paid contracting team. The pristine white walls and gleaming surfaces were immaculate once more.

Emily walked through the grand foyer, dropping her keys onto the marble table. She kicked off her expensive heels, enjoying the soft, plush carpet beneath her feet.

"Mommy!"

Olivia and Megan came running out of the interior media room, their fair, rosy cheeks flushed with happiness. They were wearing matching superhero pajamas, completely untouched by the violence and chaos that had secured their safety.

Emily dropped to her knees, sweeping both of her daughters into a massive, warm hug. She buried her face in their soft hair, the cold, sociopathic calculation that had driven her for the past forty-eight hours melting away instantly.

"I missed you, my sweet girls," Emily murmured, holding them tightly against her chest.

"You are completely safe," Emily promised, her voice thick with fierce, protective love. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you, or yell at you, or throw anything at you ever again."

She stood up, holding three-year-old Megan securely against her hip while gripping Olivia's hand. She walked them toward the massive, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bright, vibrant city skyline.

As she looked out over her conquered empire, Emily smiled, knowing her daughters would inherit a kingdom free of poison.
