Chapter 3

The command hung in the brightly lit air, toxic and suffocating. The absolute audacity of Michael's words—demanding that his own children eat discarded food off the hardwood floor—was the catalyst that finally shattered the dam. For years, Emily had endured the Carter family's condescension, their petty cruelties, and their arrogant posturing, entirely for the sake of maintaining a stable home for Olivia and Megan.

But looking into Michael’s drunk, vicious eyes, Emily realized that there was no home here. There was only a prison.

Michael mistook her silence for submission. He reached out with a heavy hand and grabbed Emily firmly by the upper arm, his fingers digging painfully into her fair skin.

"I said, pick it up, Emily," Michael growled, attempting to physically force her back down to her knees. "You are embarrassing my family on my father's birthday. Do as you are told."

Emily did not resist for the first fraction of a second. She allowed his grip to tighten just enough to expose his complete lack of balance. Then, with a sudden, fluid, and fiercely elegant motion, Emily rotated her shoulder and forcefully pulled her arm entirely out of Michael’s grip.

The sudden release of tension caused Michael to stagger forward half a step, his expensive dress shoes slipping slightly on a patch of spilled broth.

Emily rose to her full, imposing height. The beautiful, movie-star elegance she possessed transformed instantly into the terrifying, regal posture of a woman who had just realized she held all the cards. She stepped forward, physically shielding both Olivia and Megan behind her body, creating an impenetrable barrier between her children and the Carter family.

"Embarrassing your family?" Emily asked.

Her voice was no longer soft. It was eerily calm, vibrating with a tightly controlled, apocalyptic rage that made the hair on the back of Michael's neck stand up. The bright, natural light of the room illuminated the absolute, icy determination in her eyes.

"You have absolutely no idea what embarrassment looks like, Michael," Emily continued, her crisp American accent slicing through the quiet room like a scalpel. "You stand there in a suit you couldn't afford, wearing a watch you didn't buy, in a house you don't own."

"Shut your mouth, Emily," Jessica hissed from the sidelines, sensing the sudden, dangerous shift in power. "You will respect my son!"

Emily ignored the older woman entirely. Her piercing gaze remained locked onto her husband, who was currently trying to regain his drunken composure.

"For five years, I have funded your pathetic lifestyle," Emily stated, her voice projecting clearly to every single guest in the dining room. "I have paid your father’s debts. I have funded your mother's shopping habits. I bought the very shoes you are standing in right now."

Michael’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. "You bitch—"

"You’ve been embarrassing yourself with my money," Emily said, delivering the line with devastating, surgical precision. "And as of this exact second, the charity has completely dried up."
