Chapter 21

The hull of the Russian freighter smelled of diesel fuel, rotting fish, and absolute despair. The bright, cinematic lighting of the corporate world Emily Carter inhabited was a distant, unreachable memory here in the freezing, rusted bowels of the ship. Michael Carter, once accustomed to tailored suits and expensive bourbon, was now draped in filthy, oil-stained overalls. His fair, rosy skin was covered in dark bruises and grime, his manicured hands calloused and bleeding from relentless manual labor. Volkov had kept his promise. The principal of the ten million dollar debt was paid by Emily, but the interest was being extracted from Michael’s flesh. He hauled heavy crates of illicit cargo across the freezing deck, his muscles screaming in agony. A Russian enforcer walked past, striking Michael across the back with a heavy wooden baton. Michael collapsed to his knees, coughing violently against the freezing metal deck. "Get up, Carter," the enforcer spat, his heavy boots echoing loudly. "You have thirty more crates to load before you eat." Michael sobbed silently, his tears mixing with the engine grease on his face. He remembered the grand dining hall, the overturned table, and the cold, terrifying finality in Emily's eyes. He had thought he could control her. He had believed his aristocratic bloodline made him invincible. Now, he was nothing more than a slave in the dark, entirely forgotten by the world, realizing too late that his arrogance had cost him his life.
