Chapter 26

The interrogation room at the precinct was a sterile, brightly lit concrete box. Jessica Carter sat handcuffed to a heavy metal table. Her designer cardigan was torn, her fair skin smeared with dirt from the playground grass, her aristocratic arrogance completely shattered into pathetic, desperate insanity. The heavy steel door opened, and Emily stepped inside. The brilliant, harsh fluorescent light illuminated the absolute, terrifying dominance radiating from the twenty-eight-year-old billionaire. Emily did not sit down. She stood over Jessica, her piercing eyes staring down with unforgiving judgment. "You tried to take my daughter," Emily whispered, her voice echoing coldly against the concrete walls. "You took my son!" Jessica shrieked, thrashing against the handcuffs, her face twisting into an ugly mask of hatred. "You gave Michael to the Russians! You ruined my family!" "Your family ruined itself," Emily stated smoothly, unaffected by the hysterical outburst. "Michael forged my signature. You threw garbage at my children. I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own arrogance." Emily leaned forward, placing her hands flat on the metal table. "Sterling Vance is bankrupt. He turned over all the evidence of your corporate espionage to the federal prosecutors to save himself. You are facing twenty years in federal prison for cyber-terrorism, and another ten for attempted kidnapping." Jessica's breath hitched, the venomous sneer finally melting into sheer, unadulterated terror.
