Chapter 11

The quiet hum of the penthouse climate control felt deafeningly loud to Emily as she ended the encrypted call. She stood perfectly still, the brilliant, natural light catching the sharp, elegant lines of her face. She looked at Olivia and Megan, happily stacking wooden blocks on the plush rug. The fierce, maternal instinct that had driven her to flip the massive banquet table now hardened into a cold, sociopathic calculation. Michael hadn't just humiliated them; he had placed a target on her children's backs.
"Maria," Emily called out softly, not wanting to startle the girls.
The trusted nanny, a capable woman in her fifties, stepped out from the kitchen. "Yes, Ms. Carter?"
"Take the girls to the interior media room. Put on a movie and lock the heavy security door from the inside," Emily commanded, her crisp American accent betraying absolutely no panic, only absolute authority. "Do not open it for anyone except me or Arthur."
Maria noted the deadly serious tone and immediately ushered the toddlers away, leaving Emily alone in the sun-drenched living area.
Emily walked to a discreet, mirrored panel on the wall and entered a complex biometric code. The panel slid open silently, revealing a hidden safe. She bypassed the stacks of emergency cash and passports, retrieving a compact, suppressed sidearm. She checked the magazine with the smooth, practiced efficiency of a woman who had built her empire in a world where corporate espionage often bled into physical violence.
Her phone vibrated. Silas.
"They are moving faster than anticipated, Ms. Carter," Silas reported, his gravelly voice tense. "Our perimeter sensors detected three unmarked black vans entering the underground parking garage of your residential tower. They bypassed the standard security checkpoints. These are professional hit squads, not standard debt collectors."
"How did they bypass building security?" Emily demanded, chambering a round.
"They bought them off, or they eliminated them," Silas replied grimly. "My tactical team is en route, but they are ten minutes out. You have heavily armed hostiles entering your private elevator shaft right now."
"Lock down the penthouse elevators. Cut the power to the primary shafts," Emily ordered, moving swiftly toward the reinforced front doors of her suite.

"They will manually breach the service elevator," Silas warned.
"Let them try," Emily whispered, a fierce, predator's snarl distorting her elegant beauty. "I am not a victim, Silas. I am the executioner."
