Chapter 5

The deafening silence that followed the catastrophic crash was absolute. The bright, cinematic lighting of the dining hall illuminated the total devastation—shattered crystal, crushed flowers, and ruined food painted across the immaculate hardwood floors. David Carter stared at his destroyed birthday feast, his jaw hanging completely slack. Jessica clutched her pearl necklace, her chest heaving in panicked, shallow breaths as she stared at the woman she thought she had successfully subjugated.

Emily did not wait for them to recover their wits. She turned gracefully, the movement fluid and decisive. She knelt down, completely ignoring a puddle of spilled wine soaking into her expensive shoes, and gathered Olivia and Megan into her arms.

"Come on, girls," Emily said, her voice instantly returning to a soft, comforting tone meant only for them. "We are going home."

"This is your home!" Michael finally exploded, his drunken stupor momentarily pierced by genuine panic. He took a step toward her, his shoes crunching over the broken glass. "You can't just leave! You are my wife! You belong here!"

Emily stood up, holding three-year-old Megan securely against her hip while gripping four-year-old Olivia’s hand tightly. She turned her head, her piercing eyes locking onto Michael.

"I belong to no one," Emily stated, her American accent crisp and lethal. "And you will be hearing from my attorneys by morning. Do not attempt to follow me, Michael. If you come near my children again, I will not be flipping a table. I will be ruining the rest of your miserable life."

"You arrogant bitch!" Jessica shrieked, finally finding her voice. "You think you can just walk out on us? We will take the children! We will sue you for every penny you have! The courts favor the father!"

Emily let out a short, humorless laugh that sent a chill down the spines of the remaining guests.

"You don't have enough money in your checking account to hire a paralegal, Jessica," Emily countered ruthlessly. "Let alone fight my legal team. Good luck paying the caterers for this mess."

Without another word, Emily turned her back on the ruined Carter family. She walked with elegant, unshakeable confidence through the grand archway and into the main foyer. The few guests who had managed to escape the dining room parted for her like the Red Sea, keeping their heads down, terrified of drawing her ire.

"Mommy, why did you push the table?" Olivia whispered as they reached the massive front doors. The four-year-old’s voice was trembling, but her tears had stopped.

"Because sometimes, sweetheart," Emily said, pushing the heavy doors open and stepping out into the cool, refreshing night air, "when people put garbage on the table, you have to throw the whole table away."

She guided her daughters down the sweeping stone steps toward her waiting private driver, feeling the heavy, suffocating chains of the Carter family finally breaking away from her life. The war had just begun, but she had fired the first, devastating shot.
