Chapter 39

As the dinner concluded, Adrian excused himself to his study. He poured a single glass of bourbon, the crystal catching the ambient light. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the illuminated, manicured gardens.

He reflected on the violent journey that had brought him here. The betrayal by his uncle, the execution of the Commission, the slaughter of the cartels. He had committed unspeakable acts, embracing the monster within to ensure the survival of his family.

But looking at the reflection of the peaceful, quiet study in the glass, he realized the monster was no longer required to constantly surface. The fear he had instilled in his enemies was a permanent, enduring shield.

The heavy doors clicked open, and Clara walked in. She was no longer the terrified four-year-old clutching a baby; she was a strong, intelligent young woman who understood the weight of her family name.

"Dad," Clara said softly, walking over to stand beside him at the window. "Aunt Catherine told me a little bit about what happened today. About the European flowers."

Adrian looked at her, his cold, intimidating eyes softening entirely. "They are just showing respect, Clara."

"I know," Clara smiled, looking up at him with immense pride. "They are showing respect because they know you are the strongest man in the world. You kept us safe."

"That is the only thing that matters to me," Adrian murmured, putting a heavy, warm hand on her shoulder.

"I love you, Dad," Clara said, leaning her head against his arm.

"I love you too, Clara. More than life itself."
