Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the estate was a masterpiece of architectural brilliance, bathed entirely in natural, cinematic lighting. There was no artificial yellow tint to the afternoon sun pouring through the towering glass windows; instead, the light was crisp, pure, and brilliantly white, illuminating the magnificent venue. A towering white-flower aisle marker stood at the center of the room, surrounded by a freestanding wedding-card cabinet, elegant gift boxes, and ribbon baskets. The guests, all white American adults bearing fair and rosy complexions, spoke in hushed, excited American accents. The atmosphere was one of absolute wealth and untouchable power, a perfect setting for a Mafia union.

Yet, near the grand entrance, a brutal scene was unfolding, entirely detached from the elegance of the room.

Victoria Ashford, the twenty-eight-year-old bride, stood like an icy statue in her elaborate bridal gown. Her fair skin flushed with a sudden, vicious anger as the diamonds at her throat caught the bright sunlight. She glared down at a tiny, uninvited intruder. Four-year-old Clara Marlowe stood trembling on the pristine marble floor, wearing a dusty, faded formal flower-girl dress and scuffed flats. Clara’s small arms were wrapped fiercely around an eight-month-old baby, Mia, who was bundled in a simple white baby outfit and a thin blanket.

"Let go of it, you little rat," Victoria hissed, her voice a venomous whisper meant only for the child.

"No! Please don't hurt her!" Clara cried out, her small voice breaking as she tightened her grip on her baby sister.

Victoria violently yanked baby Mia’s blanket, her manicured nails digging into the cheap fabric. Clara refused to let go. The sheer force of the adult's pull sent Clara falling onto one knee, the marble bruising her skin, but the little girl miraculously kept the infant safely shielded against her chest.

"Security!" Victoria snapped, looking over her shoulder. "Where is the security? I want these street beggars thrown out immediately!"

Before the bodyguards could cross the vast ballroom, Victoria noticed Clara desperately clutching a faded photograph in her free hand. Driven by pure spite, Victoria reached down and grabbed the photograph, tearing it violently from Clara’s small, desperate fingers.

"Give it back!" Clara sobbed, tears spilling down her rosy cheeks. "It’s my mommy!"

Victoria looked at the photograph for a fraction of a second. A flash of undeniable recognition, followed immediately by cold panic, crossed her beautiful face. She threw the photograph onto the marble floor and crushed it beneath the sharp heel of her bridal shoe, grinding the image into the stone.

"Listen to me very carefully," Victoria said, leaning down so her face was inches from the weeping child. "Girls like you don’t walk into my wedding and claim my husband."

"I don't want a husband," Clara wept, cradling the crying baby. "I just want my daddy."
