Chapter 2

The heavy mahogany doors of the side ballroom entrance clicked open. The sound was subtle, but in a room filled with highly trained Mafia capos and observant guests, it commanded immediate attention. Adrian Moretti Hale stepped through the threshold, returning from the groom’s private lounge.
At twenty-nine years old, Adrian was the undisputed, powerful Boss of the Hale Mafia family. He was devastatingly handsome, possessing a rugged, masculine beauty that mirrored a classic movie star. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, though a few loose strands fell over his forehead, giving him a charming, romantic edge that masked the absolute monster beneath. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were framed by an extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble.
He wore a tailored black wedding tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly, his polished leather shoes striking the marble with a slow, deliberate cadence. A heavy Hale signet ring glinted on his right hand alongside an expensive wristwatch.
"Adrian," a nearby capo greeted softly, nodding his head.
"Is the perimeter secured?" Adrian asked. His voice was deep, slightly raspy, and naturally authoritative. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses between his words, keeping his volume low. Every sentence he delivered sounded measured, cold, and immensely dangerous.
"Yes, Boss. Tight as a drum," the capo replied in a crisp American accent.
Adrian nodded, his cold, sharp, intimidating eyes scanning the bright, sunlit ballroom. The cheerful chatter of the guests suddenly felt distant as his gaze locked onto the commotion near the entrance. He stopped dead in his tracks.
Through the parting crowd of guests, Adrian saw Victoria standing over a small child. He saw the little girl kneeling on the hard marble, her dusty dress a stark contrast to the opulence of the room, clutching an infant to her chest.
"What is happening here?" Adrian demanded, his voice slicing through the ambient noise of the ballroom like a straight razor.
Victoria flinched, spinning around. "Adrian, darling! It's nothing, just some lost children who wandered in from the street. Security is handling it."
But Clara looked directly past Victoria. The little girl's tear-filled, wide blue eyes locked onto the towering, handsome man in the black tuxedo. She recognized the sharp jawline, the dark hair, the eyes she had seen in a hundred photographs.
"Daddy…" Clara sobbed, her tiny voice echoing in the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. "Mommy said I had to find you."

The entire nearby wedding party froze. The orchestra stopped tuning their instruments. The capos halted in their tracks. It was as if the air had been sucked out of the magnificent, brightly lit ballroom.
"What did you say?" Adrian whispered, taking a slow step forward.
