Chapter 31

The tranquility of the Hale estate was a heavily fortified illusion, maintained by a decade of ruthless vigilance. The bright, cinematic sunlight that bathed the manicured lawns was a stark contrast to the shadows gathering beyond the city limits. Adrian stood in his private study, the heavy mahogany doors closed. He was thirty-nine, possessing the rugged, timeless handsome features of a veteran Mafia boss. The silver dusting his temples only enhanced his deeply masculine, authoritative aura. He wore a crisp white dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the edge of the artistic, negative-space tattoos on his chest.

Dante, now the seasoned underboss, stepped into the room. His fair skin was tight with professional tension. "Boss," Dante reported, his American accent low and urgent. "We have a situation. A new cartel from the southern border is attempting to move synthetic narcotics through our northern supply lines. They ignored the warning flares."

Adrian’s cold, intimidating eyes narrowed into dark, lethal slits. He set his crystal glass down. "They ignored the flares?" he murmured, his deep, raspy voice utilizing terrifying, controlled pauses.

"Yes, sir. They believe our decade of peace means we have grown complacent," Dante explained. "They assume you are too focused on raising your daughters to defend the borders."

Adrian’s sharply defined jawline locked. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the garden where Clara and Mia were laughing. The protective, violent instinct that had burned down the Commission ten years ago flared instantly back to life. "They mistake... my restraint... for weakness," Adrian whispered softly. "Mobilize the strike teams. We will remind them why this city belongs to the Hale family."
