Chapter 9

The silence in the dining hall was absolute, heavy and suffocating under the brilliant, natural chandelier lighting. The tension was a physical weight pressing down on every guest in the room.

[5s - 7.5s]

Damian Whitmore rose from his heavy mahogany chair.

He moved with a slow, deeply masculine, and terrifying grace. His towering frame completely dominated the bright, cinematic space. The tailored dark three-piece suit emphasized his broad shoulders, and his polished leather shoes made absolutely no sound against the imported rug.

He took two deliberate steps, placing his massive body squarely between Camille and Nora. He formed an impenetrable wall of muscle, power, and lethal authority, completely shielding the terrified maid and his weeping son from his fiancée’s wrath.

Damian did not look at Camille. He entirely dismissed her existence. He slowly lowered his head, his cold, intimidating eyes meeting Nora’s frightened gaze. The terrifying aura of the Mafia Boss softened infinitesimally, replaced by a profound, commanding reassurance.

"Nora," Damian said. His deep voice resonated through the massive room, slow, controlled, and absolute. "Keep holding him."

Every single guest at the long table stopped talking, stopped eating, and froze in place. Forks hovered midway to mouths. Crystal glasses remained suspended in the air. Two hundred of the most powerful people in the state turned their heads in absolute silence, staring directly toward Damian.

Nora let out a shaky, quiet breath. The terrifying tension in her shoulders eased slightly, the absolute protection of the most dangerous man in the city wrapping around her like a physical shield. She held Oliver tighter, resting her chin gently against his soft hair.

Hearing his father's deep, protective voice, Oliver slowly lifted his head from Nora’s shoulder.

The two-year-old boy turned, his fair, rosy face streaked with tears, and looked directly into his father’s cold, sharp eyes. The absolute innocence of the child met the ruthless violence of the father in a moment of profound clarity.

Oliver’s lower lip began to shake violently. He reached one tiny, trembling hand out toward Damian’s tailored suit jacket.

"Daddy," Oliver whispered, his tiny, fragile American accent breaking into a desperate, heartbreaking plea that carried across the silent room. "Don’t let her lock us in."

The words dropped into the bright, vivid colors of the gala like a live grenade.

Damian’s expression completely froze. The handsome, angular face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated ice. The realization of what those words meant—the systematic, hidden abuse of his only child occurring right under his roof—struck him with the kinetic force of a freight train.

Behind Damian, Camille drew a sharp, audible breath, a high-pitched sound of pure, sudden terror as she realized her horrific secret had just been exposed to a room full of killers.

Nora closed her eyes for a brief, pained moment, a single tear escaping and sliding down her beautiful, rosy cheek. The awful truth was finally out in the open, and she knew the world was about to burn.
