Chapter 7

The grand dining hall hummed with the sophisticated, polite chatter of the Mafia elite. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the opulent room perfectly, the neutral white balance highlighting the vibrant colors of the floral centerpieces and the deep crimson of the expensive wines. The fair, rosy skin of the guests glowed under the chandeliers as they eagerly awaited the final course of the lavish engagement dinner.

Damian Whitmore sat at the head of the long mahogany table. His dark, tailored three-piece suit emphasized his powerful, deeply masculine frame. His handsome, movie-star features were set in a mask of stoic, dangerous calm. The loose strands of wavy hair falling over his forehead did nothing to soften the cold, sharp intensity of his eyes. He watched the heavy double doors of the service entrance swing open.

Nora Ellis emerged from the corridor.

She looked absolutely flawless. Her sophisticated black maid dress, with its cinched waist and short A-line skirt, moved with an elegant, feminine grace. The stark white apron was tied neatly at her waist, and her fair, rosy complexion stood out beautifully against the dark fabric. She looked polished, upscale, and subtly seductive, yet her demeanor was entirely professional.

In one hand, she carried a heavy, polished silver tray holding an exquisite, delicate dessert plate. With her other hand, she gently held the hand of two-year-old Oliver Whitmore.

Oliver walked beside her, his tiny dress shirt, vest, and trousers making him look like a miniature replica of his formidable father. His small hand gripped Nora’s fingers with desperate, white-knuckled intensity.

"Ah, there is the little prince!" Thomas Rossi boomed from down the table, raising his glass in a cheerful salute.

Damian’s cold eyes softened imperceptibly as he looked at his son. He gestured with his heavily tattooed hand toward the empty, custom-built chair positioned directly to his right.

"Bring him... here," Damian commanded softly, his slow, measured voice carrying clearly through the room.

Nora nodded respectfully. She walked with quiet, poised steps across the expansive dining hall, guiding Oliver toward his father. Camille stood just behind Damian’s left shoulder, her radiant smile firmly in place, but her eyes bored into Nora with the intensity of a sniper’s laser sight.

Nora reached the head of the table. She gently released Oliver’s hand, gesturing for him to take his seat beside the most dangerous man in the city. Oliver scrambled up into the large chair, his small legs dangling over the edge. He looked small, incredibly fragile, and entirely overwhelmed by the massive room and the loud, terrifying guests.

Nora seamlessly shifted the silver tray, preparing to execute her duties. She stepped forward, leaning over slightly with perfect, elegant proportions, and carefully placed the exquisite dessert plate on the mahogany table directly before Oliver.

The timing aligned perfectly.

Nora placed the dessert plate before Oliver. The sweet, elaborate confection was designed to delight any toddler.

Instead of reaching for the plate, Oliver reacted with pure, visceral panic at the prospect of Nora walking away and leaving him trapped at the table with his future stepmother.

He lunged forward. He ignored the dessert entirely, reaching out with both of his small hands, and desperately caught the crisp white cuff of Nora’s sleeve. He raised both arms high toward her, his bright blue eyes pleading with absolute, unadulterated terror.

Nora froze. To break decorum and touch a member of the family during a formal dinner was a firing offense. But looking down into the terrified, weeping eyes of the two-year-old boy, the professional boundaries completely vanished.

Without a second of hesitation, Nora bent forward, her A-line skirt shifting gracefully. She reached out and gently lifted Oliver from the heavy wooden chair. The moment his feet left the ground, Oliver threw his tiny arms around her neck. He immediately clung to her with desperate, suffocating force, burying his rosy face deep into the white collar of her maid uniform, seeking the only source of absolute safety he had found in the entire massive estate.
