Chapter 3

The grand dining hall was an absolute triumph of interior design and architectural brilliance. The bright video colors of the room were perfectly balanced by the natural, cinematic lighting that poured from three massive crystal chandeliers suspended from the frescoed ceiling. The gentle warmth of the lights highlighted the opulent setting without casting any heavy yellow tones, ensuring the visual clarity remained breathtaking. A long, custom-built mahogany table dominated the space, set with flawless crystal, imported silver, and exquisite floral arrangements.

The guests had taken their seats, a collection of the most powerful white American families in the state. The men wore expensive, dark tailored suits, their fair and rosy skin flushed from the premium bourbon flowing freely. The women were draped in high-end evening gowns and heavy, glittering jewelry. The room was alive with the sound of crisp American accents, polite laughter, and the subtle, underlying tension of ruthless syndicates breaking bread together.

At the absolute head of the table sat Damian Whitmore.

His presence was a gravitational force that demanded total, uncompromising respect. He sat with impeccable posture, his polished leather shoes resting firmly on the imported rug. The tailored dark three-piece suit hugged his broad, masculine shoulders perfectly. He swirled the amber liquid in his crystal glass, his cold, sharp eyes scanning the lengths of the table. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed rhythmically, a silent reminder to every guest that the man hosting them was a hardened veteran of a brutal world.

"The expansion into the southern territory has been remarkably smooth, Damian," Thomas Rossi, a rival boss and current ally, remarked from a few seats down. His rosy face broke into a broad smile. "Your men operate with incredible efficiency."

Damian slowly lowered his glass. The entire immediate vicinity of the table fell silent, waiting for his response.

"Efficiency... is merely the byproduct... of discipline," Damian stated, his deep voice rolling across the table. The controlled pauses between his words forced everyone to hang on his every syllable. "We do not... leave room for error. An error... is an invitation... for chaos."

"Well said, perfectly said," Thomas agreed quickly, raising his glass in a toast.

Standing just behind Damian’s right shoulder, Camille Sterling played the role of the perfect hostess. Her evening gown shimmered in the bright chandelier light, and her heavy necklace caught the admiring glances of the other wives. She smiled radiantly, resting a proprietary hand on the back of Damian’s heavy wooden chair.

"We are just so thrilled to have our families united tonight," Camille announced brightly, projecting her voice so the entire room could hear. "Damian and I have been planning this evening for weeks. It represents the beautiful future we are building together."

From the periphery of the dining hall, Nora Ellis moved with silent, invisible grace. Her sophisticated black maid dress shifted elegantly as she poured ice water into the guests' crystal goblets. She kept her eyes averted, her expression neutral and professional, just as she had been trained.

As Nora approached the head of the table to refill Damian’s glass, she felt the sudden, chilling weight of Camille’s gaze lock onto her.

"Careful with the water, girl," Camille whispered sharply, her voice dropping so only Nora could hear. The sweet, radiant smile remained plastered on Camille’s fair face, creating a terrifying juxtaposition with the venom in her tone. "If you spill a single drop on my gown, I will ensure you never work in this state again."

"Yes, Miss Sterling," Nora replied softly, her American accent perfectly steady despite the rapid beating of her heart. She poured the water with flawless precision, not spilling a single drop.

Nora stepped back into the shadows near the velvet drapes, her eyes darting toward the massive double doors of the dining hall. The main courses had been cleared. It was almost time for the dessert service. And more importantly, it was time for Oliver to make his appearance. The dread in Nora’s chest tightened into a hard, painful knot.
