Chapter 6

The bustling, industrial-grade kitchen of the Whitmore estate was a stark contrast to the quiet terror of the second floor. Bright video colors dominated the space—the gleaming silver of the stainless steel counters, the vibrant reds of fresh berries, and the rich, dark browns of the exquisite chocolate desserts being plated. The natural, cinematic lighting eliminated all shadows, highlighting the frantic but organized chaos of the staff.
Nora entered through the swinging service doors, holding Oliver securely against her hip. The sudden noise of the kitchen made the two-year-old flinch, and he buried his face back into her neck.
"There you are!" the head chef barked, wiping his brow with a towel. He looked at Nora and the child, his booming American accent softening significantly. "Is the young master alright?"
"He was just a little overwhelmed, Chef," Nora replied smoothly, maintaining her professional composure despite the protective rage burning in her chest. "He is ready to go out now."
"Excellent. The timing is perfect. Take him to his father, and then immediately return to take the first tray of desserts out to the main table," the chef instructed, turning back to his saucepans.
Nora nodded. She walked through the kitchen, adjusting Oliver in her arms. As she reached the narrow, quiet service corridor that led directly to the grand dining hall, a shadow detached itself from the wall.
Camille Sterling stepped directly into Nora’s path, blocking the exit.
The thirty-year-old fiancée looked stunning in her evening gown, the bright light catching the diamonds at her throat. But her fair, rosy face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. Her eyes were sharp, cold, and entirely merciless as they locked onto the housemaid.
"What do you think you are doing, Nora?" Camille hissed, her voice dropping into a vicious, grating whisper.
Nora stopped dead in her tracks. Her sophisticated black maid dress felt suddenly like a target. She tightened her grip on Oliver, who instantly tensed against her body, recognizing the voice of his tormentor.
"I am bringing Oliver to the dining hall, Miss Sterling," Nora replied, her American accent carefully neutral, though her heart pounded frantically. "Mr. Whitmore requested his presence before the dessert service."
Camille took a slow, deliberate step forward, invading Nora’s personal space. The heavy scent of expensive perfume was suffocating.
"I told you," Camille whispered, her eyes flashing with a possessive, dangerous light, "that I would bring him down. You are overstepping your boundaries, you stupid girl."
"The head butler instructed me to retrieve him, ma'am, as the nanny was no longer present," Nora countered, refusing to break eye contact, an act of sheer, terrifying defiance against a woman who could have her killed.
Camille’s jaw tightened. She raised her manicured hand, her long, painted fingernails hovering just an inch from Nora’s face.
"Listen to me very carefully," Camille threatened, her voice dripping with poison. "You are a maid. You clean up dirt. That child is my property now. You hand him over to me, you walk back into that kitchen, and if you so much as look at him again tonight, I will ensure that Damian has you thrown into the harbor before the sun comes up."
Nora’s breath hitched, but she felt Oliver’s tiny hands knotting desperately into the fabric of her white apron. The sheer, visceral terror of the child anchored her soul. She could not, and would not, abandon him to this monster.

"Mr. Whitmore requested that I personally serve the dessert plates, ma'am," Nora said, her voice dropping into a quiet, unwavering register of absolute determination. "I will hand Oliver to his father, as instructed."
Camille’s eyes widened in sheer, incredulous fury. Before she could unleash her wrath, the heavy doors to the dining hall swung open, and the booming voice of a capo echoed through the corridor. The moment was broken. Camille shot Nora a look of absolute murder, turned on her heel, and glided back into the bright, cinematic light of the dining room, her fake, radiant smile instantly returning to her face.
