Chapter 2

The vast corridors of the Whitmore mansion were a symphony of polished marble and rich mahogany, illuminated by the same brilliant, natural cinematic lighting that graced the rest of the estate. Down in the expansive kitchen and servant quarters, the atmosphere was frantic but meticulously controlled.

Nora Ellis stood near a stainless-steel preparation counter, her hands resting lightly on the cool metal. At twenty-six years old, the housemaid possessed a beauty that rivaled any movie star. Her fair, rosy skin was luminous under the bright lights, and her features were delicate yet striking. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress that was a masterclass in tailored design. It featured a cinched waist that highlighted a slim, fitted silhouette, flaring out into a short A-line skirt. A crisp white apron was tied neatly at her waist, perfectly matching the stark white collar and cuffs of her dress. The elegant feminine proportions of the uniform made her look polished and upscale, subtly seductive without being revealing in the slightest.

"Nora, the dessert plates need a final dusting of powdered sugar before they go out," the head chef, an older American man with a booming voice, called out from across the kitchen.

"I'm on it, Chef," Nora replied, her American accent soft but clear. She moved gracefully toward the pastry station, her mind, however, entirely focused on the second floor of the mansion.

Another maid, a young woman named Sarah, stepped up beside Nora, handing her a fine mesh sieve. "Have you seen Oliver yet tonight?" Sarah whispered, glancing nervously toward the kitchen doors.

Nora’s hands stilled for a fraction of a second. She thought of Damian’s two-year-old son, a quiet, observant toddler who had lost his mother entirely too soon. "Not since this afternoon. The nanny was supposed to dress him for the dinner."

"I saw Camille intercept the nanny in the hallway," Sarah murmured, her voice dropping lower. Her rosy cheeks paled slightly. "She dismissed her for the evening. Camille said she wanted to bring Oliver down to the dining hall herself to show the guests what a 'perfect mother' she is going to be."

Nora’s chest tightened painfully. She gripped the edge of the counter, her knuckles turning white. Over the past few weeks, since Camille had officially moved into the mansion, Nora had noticed a chilling shift in the little boy's demeanor. Oliver had gone from a quiet but curious toddler to a child paralyzed by an unspoken fear whenever his future stepmother was in the room.

"She has no idea how to handle him," Nora said, her voice laced with a fierce, protective edge that she usually kept hidden. "He doesn't like loud noises, and she constantly drags him into crowds."

"Nora, be careful," Sarah warned, placing a hand on her arm. "She is the Boss's fiancée. If she catches you hovering around the boy again, she will have you fired. Or worse. You know what happens to people who cross the Whitmore family."

"I know the risks," Nora replied softly, turning her attention back to the exquisite chocolate desserts on the silver tray. "But he is just a baby, Sarah. He is only two years old. He needs someone to actually look at him, not just use him as a prop for a dinner party."

"Just... keep your head down tonight," Sarah pleaded. "Serve the plates, pour the wine, and stay out of her way."

Nora nodded silently, but a heavy, dark dread settled in the pit of her stomach. She knew the layout of the second floor perfectly. She knew which doors were supposed to remain open, and which ones had heavy, brass locks on the outside. And lately, when the mansion was quiet and Damian was away on business, Nora had heard sounds that haunted her waking hours. The muffled, frantic cries of a child trapped behind a solid oak door.

She picked up a delicate dessert plate, balancing it perfectly on her palm. Tonight was about survival, but as Nora looked toward the grand dining hall, she knew her loyalty lay entirely with the small, terrified boy waiting in the lion's den.
