Chapter 16

Damian walked across the room, the polished leather of his shoes making no sound. He stopped by the sofa, looking down at his sleeping son. The pale, terrified expression Oliver had worn in the dining hall was gone, replaced by the peaceful, relaxed flush of a child who finally felt safe.
"He cried for a few minutes, sir, but he exhausted himself quickly," Nora whispered, her American accent soft and respectful. "He is perfectly safe."
"I know he is," Damian said, his voice dropping into a tender, gentle register that completely contradicted his lethal reputation.
He slowly sank down onto the edge of the sofa, sitting beside Nora. The imposing, masculine frame of the Mafia Boss was incredibly close to her. She could smell the faint scent of expensive cologne and the metallic tang of adrenaline clinging to him.
"You broke protocol tonight, Nora," Damian stated softly, his cold, sharp eyes moving from his son to her face.
Nora swallowed hard, her heart fluttering nervously. "I know, Mr. Whitmore. I apologize. I couldn't just stand there and let her hurt him."
"Do not apologize," Damian interrupted, raising his tattooed hand to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear. The touch sent an electric jolt through her system. "You showed more loyalty and courage in five seconds than the entirety of my security staff showed in a month. You protected my blood."
Nora looked into his intimidating eyes, finding only profound, genuine respect and a deep, unexpected warmth. "He is a sweet boy. He deserves to be safe."
"He does," Damian agreed, his gaze locked onto hers. "And he feels safe with you. I saw the way he looked at you. You are the only light he has found in this house."

"What happens now, sir?" Nora asked quietly, acutely aware of the massive shift in the dynamics of the estate.
"Now," Damian whispered, leaning closer, "everything changes."
