Chapter 4

The atmosphere in the dining hall grew heavier as the evening progressed, the initial polite pleasantries giving way to the deeper, more complex political maneuvering of the syndicate leaders. The bright, vivid colors of the room—the deep reds of the wine, the sparkling silver, the vibrant floral centerpieces—provided a stark contrast to the cold, calculating conversations occurring in hushed tones.

Damian Whitmore remained a stoic, intimidating figure at the head of the table. His movie-star handsome face betrayed absolutely no emotion as he listened to a proposal from a lower-tier capo regarding a real estate acquisition. The loose strands of dark, wavy hair falling over his forehead gave him an almost relaxed appearance, but his sharp, intimidating eyes missed nothing. He was acutely aware of the shifting loyalties, the subtle glances, and the underlying greed of every person sitting at his table.

"The zoning board is playing hardball, Mr. Whitmore," the capo explained, his fair skin sweating slightly under Damian’s intense gaze. "They want a thirty percent increase in the 'administrative fees' before they approve the permits for the downtown project."

Damian’s jawline, defined by the short, neatly trimmed stubble, tightened imperceptibly. He slowly leaned forward, resting his tattooed hands flat on the mahogany table.

"You will tell the zoning board," Damian murmured, his voice a low, lethal vibration that cut through the ambient noise of the room, "that the original offer... remains on the table. If they do not... find it acceptable... they will find themselves... entirely unemployed."

"Yes, Boss. I'll deliver the message tonight," the capo nodded frantically, taking a large gulp of his wine.

Camille, seeking to interject herself into the dynamic and display her authority, leaned over and placed her hand over Damian’s tattooed fingers.

"Damian handles these petty bureaucrats so brilliantly," Camille laughed, looking around the table to ensure she had the attention of the other wives. "He is so fiercely protective of our family's assets. It's exactly why I know he will be the perfect husband, and why we are going to create such a wonderful home for little Oliver."

At the mention of his son's name, Damian slowly pulled his hand out from under Camille’s grasp. He did it smoothly, without overt aggression, but the dismissal was absolute. He reached for his water goblet, his eyes shifting toward the heavy dining room doors.

"Where is my son?" Damian asked, his voice flat and uncompromising. "He was supposed to be brought down... before the dessert service."

"Oh, don't worry, darling," Camille smiled brightly, though her eyes flashed with a brief, hidden annoyance. "I instructed the nanny to bring him down right on schedule. He's probably just being fussy. You know how toddlers can be when they are tired."

Standing by the service doors, Nora Ellis heard the exchange perfectly. Her sophisticated black maid dress felt suddenly suffocating. She knew the nanny had been dismissed hours ago by Camille herself. The realization that Camille was actively lying to the head of the Mafia about his own son’s whereabouts sent a shockwave of cold terror down Nora’s spine.

"Nora," the head butler hissed quietly from the service corridor. "The dessert plates are ready. Go upstairs and fetch the boy. Miss Sterling dismissed his nanny, and he is alone in his room. Bring him down quietly, and then begin the service."

"Yes, sir," Nora whispered back.

She slipped out of the bright, cinematic light of the dining hall and hurried toward the grand staircase. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She took the stairs quickly, her flats making no sound on the imported carpets. As she reached the second-floor landing, the profound silence of the massive mansion pressed in on her. She walked swiftly toward the master wing, her breath catching in her throat as she approached the heavy oak door of Oliver's nursery. She prayed to whatever God was listening that the heavy brass lock on the outside of the door was not engaged.
