Chapter 8

The panic that gripped the Bennett estate was palpable. The cinematic, bright summer afternoon felt mocking as the reality of their utter financial ruin began to set in.
Diane stood in her massive living room, screaming at a team of very expensive, very nervous lawyers.
"What do you mean she controls the trust?!" Diane roared, throwing a crystal vase against the fireplace, where it shattered into a hundred pieces. "My husband built this company! I am his widow!"
"Your husband left the controlling shares to your son, Diane," the lead attorney explained, wiping sweat from his fair forehead. "And your son, before he passed, transferred absolute, irrevocable control of the entire estate to his wife, Claire. You have been living on a discretionary allowance that Claire authorized. She just revoked the authorization."
"She is a nobody!" Diane shrieked, tearing at her hair. "We treat her like a stray dog! How can she own my house?!"
"She doesn't just own the house, Diane," the lawyer said grimly. "She owns the bank that holds the mortgage on this house. And we just received a notice of immediate foreclosure. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises."
While Diane descended into a hysterical breakdown in the living room, Emily Carter was quietly slipping out the back door.
Emily drove her modest sedan into the city, her heart pounding. She had always known Claire was too calm, too observant to be the helpless victim Diane painted her as. Emily arrived at the towering obsidian high-rise, giving her name to the intimidating security guards in the lobby.
To her surprise, she was immediately escorted up to the penthouse.
When the elevator doors opened, Emily gasped. Claire was standing by the window, looking breathtakingly beautiful, dressed in a sharp, tailored designer suit. She looked like a billionaire CEO, entirely shedding the meek persona she had worn for years.
"Claire," Emily whispered, stepping into the massive, sunlit room.
"Hello, Emily," Claire said, turning around, her voice perfectly controlled. "Would you like a drink?"
"You're destroying them," Emily blurted out, her American accent trembling. "Diane is losing her mind. They are taking the house."
"I told her she ate her last piece of meat," Claire replied calmly, walking over to a crystal decanter and pouring two glasses of water. "I am simply keeping my promise."
"Claire, I didn't laugh," Emily pleaded, stepping forward, desperate to save herself from the financial slaughter. "When she hit Evan. I didn't laugh. You saw me. I tried to stop her."
"You watched," Claire corrected, handing Emily a glass. "For four years, Emily, you watched Diane abuse me. You watched her isolate my son. You didn't laugh, but you didn't intervene. You drank your iced tea and stayed quiet to protect your own allowance."
"I was scared of her!" Emily cried. "You know how she is! She threatened to cut me off if I ever took your side!"
"And now I am cutting her off," Claire said, her eyes devoid of mercy. "Tell me, Emily. Did Diane really think she was going to get custody of Evan today?"
Emily swallowed hard, realizing her only chance at survival was total honesty. "Yes. She hired a judge. A corrupt family court judge on her payroll. They were going to file an emergency order claiming you were an unfit mother because of your 'violent outburst' yesterday. They were going to have the police take Evan from you tonight."

Claire’s eyes darkened into a terrifying, bottomless black.
"Thank you, Emily," Claire whispered. "You may leave now."
