Chapter 5

Back on the bright, manicured lawns of the Bennett estate, absolute chaos had descended. The cinematic perfection of the summer barbecue was ruined.

Diane Bennett was sitting in a plush patio chair, holding a bag of frozen peas against her swelling, dirt-streaked face. She was hyperventilating, her fair skin mottled with furious, ugly red patches. Aides and relatives hovered around her, offering napkins and glasses of water, their earlier laughter entirely replaced by shocked, scandalized whispers.

"I want her arrested!" Diane shrieked, slamming her hand down on the armrest. "I want that ungrateful bitch thrown in a cell, and I want full custody of my grandson by the end of the week! Call the lawyers!"

Emily Carter stood a few feet away, her hands trembling as she held her plastic cup. The casual summer dress she wore suddenly felt stifling. She couldn't shake the image of Claire’s eyes right before the slap. It wasn't the impulsive rage of a desperate woman; it was the calculated, terrifying execution of a threat.

"Aunt Diane," Emily interjected nervously, stepping forward. "Maybe we should wait before we call the police. The optics..."

"The optics?!" Diane roared, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at Emily. "She shoved garbage into my mouth! She assaulted me on my own property! I will destroy her! I will make sure she starves in the gutter where my idiot son found her!"

"But her face," Emily whispered, her voice shaking. "Did you see her face, Diane? She didn't look scared. She looked like she was about to end us."

"She is nothing!" Diane spat, tossing the bag of peas onto the grass. "She is a penniless widow living off the charity of this family! I control her trust! I control her housing! By tomorrow morning, she won't even be able to buy a loaf of bread!"

"I don't know," Emily murmured, looking toward the iron gates where the black SUV had disappeared. "She said you'd never eat meat again. It sounded... specific."

"It sounded like the dramatic ravings of a lunatic!" Diane scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. She turned to her eldest nephew, a tall, fair-skinned man in a polo shirt. "Richard! Get my legal team on the phone immediately. Tell them to draft an emergency custody order. I want that child removed from her care tonight."

"Yes, Aunt Diane," Richard said, pulling out his phone.

"We are going to crush her," Diane vowed, her rosy cheeks burning with a toxic mix of humiliation and vengeance. "She thinks she can walk away from this family? I will show her what real power looks like."

But as Diane stood in the bright, warm sunlight, plotting her cruel revenge, she was completely unaware that the very ground beneath her empire had already began to crumble. The financial guillotine was already falling, and she was standing directly beneath the blade.
