Chapter 21

The aftermath of Julian Vance's execution was handled with the cold, absolute efficiency that defined Claire Bennett’s new empire. The bodies were removed by Marcus and his elite cleanup crew before the sun had fully set over the city. The shattered glass of the penthouse was replaced, the pristine marble floors scrubbed until they gleamed flawlessly under the cinematic, neutral white lighting.

Claire sat in the expansive living area, her tactical vest discarded. She wore a tailored silk blouse, her fair, rosy skin entirely free of the tension that had gripped her for five years. The ghost of her past was permanently exorcised. She poured a glass of expensive bourbon, the heavy crystal clinking softly.

"The building is secure, Boss," Marcus reported, stepping into the room. His crisp American accent held a profound, newfound respect. "Julian's remaining loyalists in the city are scattering. Without his leadership, his syndicate is collapsing."

"Ensure they continue to collapse, Marcus," Claire commanded smoothly. "Absorb their lucrative territories, but liquidate anyone who remains loyal to his memory. I want his entire legacy erased."

"Consider it done," Marcus nodded.

The heavy steel doors of the panic suite clicked open. Evan ran into the living room, wearing his pajamas. "Mommy, can I have a snack before bed?"

Claire’s terrifying, apex predator demeanor vanished entirely. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around her four-year-old son, kissing his rosy cheek. "Of course, my sweet boy. Let's go to the kitchen."

As she walked away with her son, Marcus watched her, recognizing that Claire Bennett was no longer a student or a victim. She was the undisputed, untouchable queen of the criminal underworld.
