Chapter 7

The following afternoon, the bright, vibrant colors of an upscale, artisanal grocery store provided the perfect backdrop for a catastrophic public humiliation.

Diane Bennett, her cheek expertly concealed under heavy, expensive makeup to hide the bruise Claire had given her, strutted down the aisles. She wore a pristine white summer blouse and large sunglasses, projecting an image of untouchable wealth. She was determined to host an even larger, more extravagant dinner party that evening to prove to her social circle that she was completely unfazed by the "incident."

She arrived at the luxury meat counter, pointing her manicured finger at the display.

"I will take six of the dry-aged Wagyu ribeyes," Diane demanded, her American accent dripping with condescending authority. "And wrap them quickly. I am in a hurry."

The butcher, a young man who recognized her as a regular, nodded quickly and began preparing the expensive cuts.

Diane approached the register, pulling a heavy, black titanium credit card from her designer purse. She slapped it down on the counter with a sense of immense self-importance.

The cashier swiped the card. The machine beeped, a harsh, flat sound.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Bennett," the cashier said, frowning at the screen. "It says 'Declined. Please contact your financial institution.'"

Diane scoffed loudly, rolling her eyes. "Your machine is obviously broken. Run it again."

The cashier obliged, wiping the magnetic strip and inserting the chip. The machine beeped again, flashing a red error message.

"It's declined, ma'am," the cashier repeated, his voice dropping as the customers behind Diane began to murmur.

"That is impossible!" Diane snapped, her face flushing a deep, angry red. "Do you know who I am? That card has no limit! Run my other one!"

She furiously dug into her purse, retrieving a gold card and throwing it onto the counter. The cashier swiped it.

"Declined," the cashier said, looking up with a mixture of pity and annoyance. "Ma'am, the terminal is requesting that I confiscate the cards."

"Confiscate them?!" Diane shrieked, her voice echoing through the bright, airy store. "I will have you fired! I own half this town!"

"Ma'am, if you can't pay, I have to put the meat back," the butcher interjected, stepping up to the register and pulling the wrapped Wagyu steaks away from her.

Diane stared at the retreating packages of meat, a sudden, terrifying chill washing over her. Claire’s voice echoed in her mind, cold and devastating: Enjoy it. That’s the last piece of meat you’ll ever eat in your life.

"Wait," Diane whispered, pulling out her phone with trembling hands. She dialed her private banker, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Hello, Mrs. Bennett," the banker answered, his tone unusually cold and formal.

"What is wrong with my accounts?!" Diane demanded hysterically. "My cards are declining at the grocery store!"

"I am sorry, Mrs. Bennett," the banker said flatly. "All of your accounts have been frozen by order of the primary trust holder. Your assets are currently in liquidation."

May you like

"What trust holder?!" Diane screamed.

"Claire Bennett, ma'am," the banker replied. "She owns everything."
