Chapter 23

At the mention of her former in-laws, Claire’s sharply defined jawline tightened. The air on the sunlit balcony seemed to freeze. "I exiled them to the northern borders. I stripped them of everything. They are irrelevant."

"They are desperate, Claire," Elias cautioned carefully. "Our intelligence indicates that Diane has made contact with a low-level smuggling ring operating out of Canada. She is attempting to sell insider information about your early supply routes in exchange for capital."

Claire turned fully toward the attorney. The deeply intimidating, powerful aura she projected instantly suffocated the space. "She is trying to sell my secrets to buy a ticket back into civilization."

"Yes," Elias nodded. "It is a minor threat, but a threat nonetheless."

Claire looked back out at the lawn. She watched Evan fall into the grass, laughing hysterically as the puppy licked his face. The peace she had violently secured for him was absolute, and she would not tolerate a single, pathetic parasite attempting to breach her walls.

"Marcus," Claire called out.

The towering Security Manager stepped out from the shadows of the house. "Yes, Boss."

"Prepare the jet," Claire commanded, her voice dropping into a lethal, freezing register. "We are going north. I am going to remind Diane Bennett why she should have stayed in the snow."
