Chapter 10

The private dining room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The bright, cinematic lighting cast a harsh glare on Diane’s ruined, desperate face. She stood alone at the end of the long mahogany table, stripped of her wealth, her allies, and her power in less than twenty-four hours.
Claire walked slowly around the table, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. She stopped just a few feet away from the trembling matriarch.
"You took a plate of food from a hungry four-year-old boy," Claire whispered, her American accent dripping with a cold, terrifying disgust. "You struck my child across the face to make your pathetic relatives laugh."
"I was just trying to teach him discipline," Diane wept, her aristocratic facade entirely shattered. She sank to her knees, the fabric of her expensive dress pooling on the floor. "Claire, please. I have nothing. They took my credit cards. They locked the gates to the estate. I don't even have a place to sleep tonight."
"I told you," Claire said, looking down at the woman with absolutely zero mercy. "You ate your last piece of meat on that driveway. You will live the rest of your life on whatever scraps you can beg from the people you used to look down on. And if you ever, ever attempt to come near my son again, I won't just take your money. I will take your freedom."
Claire turned her back on the sobbing, ruined woman and walked out of the dining room. Marcus and the guards followed, the heavy oak doors swinging shut, leaving Diane Bennett alone in the quiet, absolute ruin of her own making.
Claire stepped out into the cool night air of the city, taking a deep, cleansing breath. The war was over. Evan was safe, her empire was secured, and the monsters who had hurt him had been eradicated with surgical precision.
She climbed into the back of her waiting SUV, leaning her head against the plush leather seat.
"Take us home, Marcus," Claire murmured, closing her eyes.
But as the SUV merged onto the brightly lit highway, Claire’s private, encrypted phone began to vibrate violently in her purse.
She frowned, pulling the device out. The caller ID was blocked, a heavy encryption protocol masking the origin. She swiped to answer, holding the phone to her ear.
"Claire," a deep, chillingly familiar male voice echoed through the speaker. It was a voice she hadn't heard in five years—a voice from the dark, violent past she had run away from before meeting her late husband.
Claire’s heart stopped. Her fair, rosy skin turned to ice.
"You made a lot of noise today, Claire," the voice chuckled, a dark, menacing sound that made the hairs on her arms stand up. "Liquidating a multi-million dollar estate tends to draw attention. It took me a long time to find you. But I see you're finally using the skills I taught you."
"How did you get this number?" Claire whispered, her voice trembling for the first time since she left the estate.
"I'm coming to see my boy, Claire," the man said, his American accent laced with a terrifying promise. "I'm coming to see Evan. Keep the door unlocked."
The line went dead. Claire stared at the black screen of the phone, the bright city lights flashing past the windows. She had just burned down a family to protect her son, but the true monster had just found them.
