Chapter 9

The fragile peace of the morning was shattered exactly at 2:00 PM.
Adrian was standing in his private study, dictating a list of personnel changes to Mara, who was efficiently typing the orders into an encrypted tablet. The bright, elegant warmth of the room felt secure, until the heavy double doors burst open without warning.
Marcus, the head of security, stepped into the room. His face was grim, and he carried a sleek, black laptop.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice tight. "We have a massive problem."
Adrian didn't flinch, but his powerful shoulders squared instantly. "Did Shaw make a move on the docks?"
"No," Marcus said, walking over to the desk and setting the laptop down. "Shaw didn't attack the businesses. He attacked the narrative."
Marcus opened the laptop and hit play on a video file.
The screen illuminated with the logo of the city's largest, most sensationalized news network. The anchor, a polished woman with fair, rosy skin, stared gravely into the camera.
"Breaking news this hour," the anchor announced. "A shocking scandal has erupted within the city's elite circles. We have received an exclusive, anonymous statement from Vivienne Shaw, daughter of prominent businessman Arthur Shaw, claiming that she was violently assaulted and held hostage last night by her former fiancé, billionaire Adrian Vale."
Mara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
The broadcast continued, showing a carefully curated, dimly lit photograph of Vivienne looking terrified, complete with fake, painted bruises on her arms.
"Ms. Shaw alleges that Vale, a man long rumored to have deep ties to organized crime, flew into an unprovoked, drug-fueled rage during their engagement dinner," the anchor read. "She claims she barely escaped with her life. Authorities have confirmed they are opening a full investigation into the Vale estate. We will bring you more on this developing story..."
Marcus slammed the laptop shut. "It's a media blitz, Boss. They've paid off the network executives to run this story non-stop. They are trying to force the police to raid the compound. If the Feds get a warrant based on domestic terrorism charges, we won't be able to hold the gates."
Adrian stood perfectly still, his angular face set in absolute, freezing stone. The cold, perceptive eyes narrowed into lethal slits. Arthur Shaw hadn't sent an army; he had sent a wrecking ball aimed directly at Adrian's legitimate front.
"He thinks he can use the law against me," Adrian growled, his deep voice a vibrating threat.
"Adrian, they have pictures," Mara panicked, stepping toward the desk. "They are going to arrest you! They can take Leo away from me again if child services gets involved in a raid!"
"No one is taking your son, Mara," Adrian commanded softly, reaching out to grip her shoulder, grounding her frantic energy.
He turned to Marcus. "Call the mayor. Tell him if he signs a warrant for my property, I will release the ledgers showing his offshore accounts to the very same news network."
"Yes, Boss," Marcus nodded, turning to leave.
"Wait," Mara said suddenly, her expressive eyes widening as a brilliant, desperate idea struck her. She looked at Adrian, her softly oval face illuminated by the bright light of the study.
"The brooch," Mara said quickly. "Adrian, the brooch she made me wear. You crushed it on the floor of the dining room."
"I destroyed the listening device, yes," Adrian frowned, not following her logic.
"But you didn't destroy the transmission," Mara explained, her voice rising with excitement. "She wasn't recording it locally. She told me she was listening to it live. That means the audio of the entire dinner party—including the part where she admitted to kidnapping Leo and planting the bug—was transmitted to a server or a phone somewhere."
Adrian’s eyes widened slightly as the genius of her realization hit him.

"If we can hack into her cloud account," Mara continued, "we have the audio of her admitting to the extortion and the kidnapping. We can prove she is lying."
Adrian looked at his new personal assistant, a fierce, predatory smile finally breaking across his handsome face. "Marcus. Get the tech team in here immediately. We are going hunting."
