Chapter 4

The absolute silence in the grand dining hall was a heavy, suffocating pressure. Not a single silver fork scraped against porcelain. The thirty elite guests sat frozen, their fair, rosy skin bathed in the bright, elegant light, bearing witness to the unravelling of a queen.
Adrian Vale stood perfectly still, his angular face set in a mask of pure, terrifying stone. He looked down at Vivienne, his cold eyes dissecting her panic. The small tattoo on his neck seemed to pulse with the suppressed, violent rhythm of his heart.
"Where is the boy?" Adrian asked.
His deep voice did not rise in volume, yet it commanded the massive room with inescapable authority. The deliberate pause before the question made it sound less like an inquiry and more like a final judgment.
Vivienne swallowed hard, a visible, painful gulp in her throat. Her diamond earrings shook violently as her entire body began to tremble. "Adrian, darling, please... you are completely misunderstanding the situation."
"Am I?" Adrian asked, his tone perfectly flat.
"She is an unfit mother!" Vivienne cried out, her voice pitching into a hysterical, defensive shrillness. She pointed a manicured finger toward Mara, trying desperately to shift the narrative. "The boy was living in squalor before she started working here! I arranged for him to stay with a reputable family! I was doing them a favor! I just... I just asked for a little discretion in return."
"Discretion?" Adrian asked softly. He reached out with his tattooed hand and gently unpinned the ornate, expensive brooch from Mara’s white apron. He held it up to the golden light of the chandeliers.
"Are you listening right now, or merely recording?" Adrian asked the small piece of jewelry, his voice a low, lethal purr.
He dropped the heavy brooch onto the hardwood floor and crushed it beneath the heel of his polished leather shoe with a sharp, sickening crunch of metal and glass.
"Adrian, you are ruining the engagement dinner!" Vivienne shrieked, standing up from her chair, the sculpted satin gown rustling aggressively. "You cannot humiliate me in front of these people over a servant's child!"
"Where is the boy?" Adrian repeated, entirely ignoring her outburst.
"I won't tell you!" Vivienne spat, her controlling temperament completely overriding her common sense. "If you humiliate me tonight, she will never see him again! My people have him, Adrian. You can't touch me without causing a massive scandal with my family!"
The guests collectively held their breath. Vivienne’s family controlled the unions; they were a powerful, necessary alliance. She was banking everything on the belief that Adrian would choose business over a housemaid.
Adrian slowly turned his head to look at his top lieutenant, a broad-shouldered man sitting halfway down the table.
"Marcus," Adrian said.
The lieutenant stood up instantly. "Yes, Boss."
"Clear the room," Adrian commanded softly.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus nodded.
The spell of paralysis broke instantly. The thirty guests, seasoned criminals who knew exactly what a cleared room meant, practically scrambled out of their chairs. They didn't speak. They didn't offer goodbyes. They moved with a frantic, silent urgency, pouring out of the grand double doors until the massive dining room was entirely empty.
Vivienne stood alone at the table, her fair skin completely white. The luminous, airy light of the room suddenly felt like an interrogation spotlight.

Adrian stood towering over the wreckage of the crushed brooch. He looked at Mara, then back at Vivienne.
"What makes you think," Adrian asked, his voice a low, vibrating threat, "that I care about a scandal?"
