Chapter 6

The heavy oak doors of Adrian’s private study closed with a definitive, solid thud, sealing them inside a room that smelled faintly of expensive leather and aged bourbon. The study was bathed in the same bright, airy light as the rest of the mansion, but it felt intimately secluded.

Adrian guided Mara to a plush, dark leather sofa and gently instructed her to sit. She sank into the cushions, her sophisticated black maid dress looking stark against the rich brown leather. She was still trembling, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her eyes fixed on the floor.

Adrian walked over to a crystal decanter resting on his massive desk. He poured two fingers of amber liquid into a heavy glass and brought it over to her.

"Drink," Adrian said, holding the glass out to her.

Mara looked up, her delicate cheekbones pale and drawn. She hesitated before taking the glass with shaking fingers. The fiery liquid burned her throat, but it immediately sent a rush of grounding warmth through her chest.

Adrian sat in a heavy armchair opposite the sofa, leaning his forearms on his knees. He watched her with cold, perceptive eyes, analyzing the beautiful woman who had just inadvertently blown his criminal alliance to pieces.

"How long has she been blackmailing you?" Adrian asked, his deep voice a low, steady rumble.

Mara swallowed hard, setting the empty glass on the coffee table. "Two weeks, Mr. Vale. Two weeks ago, she came to me and said she had 'arranged' for a better life for my son, Leo. She said if I wanted to see him again, I had to wear that brooch and report everything I heard from your capos and your guests directly to her."

"Why didn't you come to me?" Adrian asked, his tone devoid of accusation, simply seeking the truth.

"You are a terrifying man, Mr. Vale," Mara answered honestly, her expressive eyes meeting his. "She told me that if I told you, you would kill her, and her family would kill my son in retaliation. She said you wouldn't care about a maid's child. I... I couldn't risk his life."

Adrian leaned back in the armchair, the generous negative space of his hand tattoos flexing as he steepled his fingers. He understood survival. He understood the desperate, primal instinct of a parent protecting their young.

"You are a brave woman, Mara," Adrian said softly. "You stood in front of forty of the most dangerous men in this city and told the truth. Most of my soldiers wouldn't have the spine for that."

"I was terrified," Mara whispered, a small, self-deprecating smile touching her gently curved lips.

"Courage is not the absence of fear," Adrian stated, his angular face serious. "It is acting in spite of it."

Suddenly, the heavy radio clipped to Adrian’s belt crackled to life.

"Boss," Marcus’s voice came through, crisp and professional. "We have secured the objective at the lodge. Two hostiles neutralized. The boy is safe and entirely unharmed. We are en route back to the estate. ETA twenty minutes."

Mara let out a loud, shuddering gasp. She covered her mouth with both hands, tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilling over her rosy cheeks. She bent forward, weeping uncontrollably into her hands.

Adrian watched her, a strange, unfamiliar tightness gripping his chest. He was a man who traded in fear, violence, and intimidation. He rarely witnessed tears of salvation.

"He is safe, Mara," Adrian said quietly.

She looked up, wiping her face frantically with the cuffs of her white uniform. "Thank you. Oh my God, thank you so much, Mr. Vale. I will work for you for free for the rest of my life. I will scrub every floor in this house."

"No," Adrian said, standing up. He walked over to his desk and leaned against the edge, looking down at her. "You are no longer a maid in this house, Mara."

Panic flashed in her expressive eyes. "You're firing me? Please, I need—"

"I am not firing you," Adrian interrupted, his voice returning to its measured, authoritative cadence. "You are too valuable to this family to be serving water. When your son arrives, you will be moved into the guest suite in the east wing. You will have a new position."

May you like

"What position?" Mara asked, completely bewildered.

Adrian looked at the beautiful, courageous woman sitting on his sofa. "I need someone I can trust. Someone whose loyalty isn't bought, but proven. You are going to be my personal assistant, Mara. And your son will want for nothing as long as he lives under my roof."
