Chapter 10

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in modern warfare. The Vale estate remained locked down, the bright, airy colors of the mansion contrasting sharply with the intense, sleepless energy of the tech team working in the basement server room.

Adrian and Mara worked side-by-side, fueled by black coffee and sheer determination. The professional boundaries had completely evaporated in the crucible of the crisis. They operated as a seamless unit.

By late Tuesday night, the tech team broke through Vivienne’s hastily secured cloud storage. The audio file was pristine. It captured every single word spoken in the luminous dining room—Vivienne’s frantic lies, Mara’s terrified confession, and the undeniable admission of the kidnapping.

"We have it," Adrian announced, standing over the tech team's monitors, his thick, slightly wavy hair disheveled, but his masculine presence as commanding as ever.

He pulled out his encrypted smartphone and dialed the personal number of the network executive running the smear campaign.

"This is Adrian Vale," he said, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, absolute authority. "I am sending you an audio file. You will play it on the top of the hour broadcast. If you do not, I will burn your network to the ground, and I will personally ensure you never work in this city again."

He hit send on the file and hung up without waiting for a response.

Ten minutes later, Adrian, Mara, and Marcus stood in the private study, watching the massive television screen.

The same polished anchor appeared on the screen, her fair, rosy skin visibly pale as she read the breaking news update.

"We have received an exclusive, authenticated audio recording from the night of the alleged assault at the Vale estate," the anchor stammered slightly. "The recording appears to contradict Ms. Shaw's claims entirely, and instead implicates her in a terrifying extortion and kidnapping plot."

The audio began to play over the broadcast. Vivienne’s shrill, panicked voice filled the airwaves, confessing to locking a seven-year-old boy in a hunting lodge to silence a housemaid.

Mara let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees weak with relief. She leaned back against the edge of the leather sofa, closing her eyes. It was over. The truth was out.

"The police are already issuing a warrant for her arrest, Boss," Marcus smiled grimly, looking at his phone. "Arthur Shaw is trying to distance himself, claiming he knew nothing about his daughter's actions. The union bosses are abandoning ship. Shaw's empire is collapsing in real-time."

"Let them burn," Adrian said softly. He turned off the television and looked at Marcus. "Give the men a bonus. Then go home and get some sleep."

"Yes, Boss," Marcus nodded, exiting the study and leaving Adrian and Mara alone.

The luminous, elegant warmth of the study felt incredibly peaceful. Adrian walked over to Mara. She looked exhausted, her beautiful face drawn, but her expressive eyes were shining with a profound, quiet victory.

"You saved my life, Adrian," Mara whispered, looking up at his handsome, angular face.

"You saved mine, Mara," Adrian replied, his deep voice dropping into an intimate, gentle register. "You gave me back the truth."

He reached out, his tattooed hand gently brushing a loose strand of hair behind her delicate ear. The touch was electric, a spark igniting in the quiet room. Mara didn't pull away. She leaned slightly into his hand, her rosy skin warming under his touch.

The engagement dinner had been a disaster, a violent unravelling of lies and deceit. But as Adrian looked down at the woman who had stood beside him in the fire, he realized that sometimes, you have to burn the false kingdoms to the ground to find the true queen waiting in the ashes. The war with the Shaw family was won, but the story of Adrian and Mara had only just begun.
