Chapter 8

The morning sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vale estate, bathing the breakfast room in a brilliant, airy light. The clean whites of the marble countertops and the gentle golden highlights of the fixtures created a serene atmosphere, a stark contrast to the violence that had erupted the night before.

Adrian sat at the head of a smaller, round table, nursing a cup of black coffee. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the full extent of the refined artistic tattoos wrapping around his forearms. He looked over a stack of encrypted financial reports, preparing for the inevitable fallout with the Shaw family’s union bosses.

The door opened, and Mara walked in.

She was no longer wearing the sophisticated black maid dress. Instead, she wore a simple, elegant ivory blouse and tailored slacks that she had found waiting for her in the suite’s expansive closet. The soft, elegant feminine proportions of her figure were highlighted perfectly. Her hair was still gathered in a neat, low twist, and her delicate cheekbones were flushed with a natural, rosy color after a full night of uninterrupted sleep.

"Good morning, Adrian," Mara said softly, stepping into the room with a newfound confidence.

"Good morning, Mara," Adrian replied, his deep voice a low, welcoming rumble. He gestured to the empty chair beside him. "Sit. Did Leo sleep well?"

"He slept through the night," Mara smiled, taking a seat. "He’s currently watching cartoons in the suite. One of your guards, Silas, brought him a tray of pancakes."

Adrian nodded, taking a sip of his coffee. "Silas has a soft spot for kids. Your son is entirely safe."

He pushed the financial reports aside and folded his hands on the table. The extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline shadowed his rigid expression as he shifted back into business mode.

"Your new position as my personal assistant begins today," Adrian stated, his cold, perceptive eyes locking onto hers. "You will manage my schedule, oversee the household staff, and handle all internal communications that do not require military encryption. You will have full access to my private accounts for household expenditures, and your salary will reflect your status as my most trusted confidant."

Mara stared at him, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the responsibility he was handing her. "Adrian, I... I don't have a degree in business. I was a waitress before I started cleaning houses."

"I do not care about degrees," Adrian dismissed with a measured pause. "I care about loyalty. I care about the fact that you looked a room full of killers in the eye to protect your son. You have a sharp mind, Mara. You will learn the rest."

"What about the Shaw family?" Mara asked, her expressive brows drawing together in concern. "Vivienne said her father controls the docks. Won't they come after you?"

"Arthur Shaw is a politician," Adrian sneered, the word dripping with contempt. "He thrives on backroom deals and public approval. He cannot afford a full-scale mafia war in the streets of this city. It would destroy his legitimate businesses."

"But he will retaliate," Mara insisted.

"He will try," Adrian agreed, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "But I have spent the entire night securing his lieutenants. Money talks louder than blood, Mara. By noon today, three of Arthur Shaw's top union bosses will be on my payroll. He will wake up a king without an army."

Mara looked at the handsome, deeply masculine man sitting beside her. He was a monster to the rest of the world, a man who orchestrated violence and controlled empires. But to her, he was the man who had torn his own life apart to save her child.

"I won't let you down, Adrian," Mara promised softly, reaching out to briefly touch the tattooed skin of his hand.

Adrian looked down at her slender fingers resting against his ink. He didn't pull away. For a brief, electrifying second, the bright, luminous room felt entirely intimate, the lines between boss and assistant blurring dangerously under the gentle golden glow of the morning light.
