Chapter 3

The air in the grand dining hall turned freezing cold despite the luminous, golden warmth pouring from the chandeliers. Adrian Vale moved with a sudden, predatory grace that defied his massive size. He stepped smoothly away from his chair, positioning his broad, powerful shoulders directly between Mara and the rest of the table.
He created an impenetrable physical barrier, keeping the trembling housemaid tucked safely behind his shoulder. It was a subtle, yet unmistakable declaration of protection that sent a shockwave of confusion and terror through the observing guests. The mafia boss was shielding a servant from his future bride.
Vivienne gripped the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles turning bone-white against the fine linen. The engagement ring on her finger felt suddenly like a target. She looked directly at Adrian, desperately attempting to salvage the catastrophic situation.
She forced her mouth into a wide, reassuring smile that did not reach her eyes.
"She agreed to wear it," Vivienne blurted out.
Her reply was entirely too quick, her American accent strained as she attempted to keep her tone carefully light and conversational. "It was just a security measure, Adrian. With so many people in the house for the party, I just wanted to ensure the staff wasn't gossiping about the family. It was harmless."
Adrian did not speak immediately. He stood towering over the table, his tailored dark three-piece suit an imposing wall of authority. He gave Vivienne a slow, knowing look. His cold eyes stripped away her elegant satin gown, her diamonds, and her high-society pedigree, revealing the desperate, manipulating liar beneath.
"Is that so?" Adrian finally asked, his voice a low, terrifying rumble punctuated by a deliberate pause.
Vivienne’s forced smile began to tighten, the corners of her mouth twitching violently as the lie crumbled under the weight of his stare. She realized, with a sickening drop in her stomach, that Adrian was not looking for an explanation. He was looking for an execution.
Behind Adrian’s shoulder, Mara squeezed her eyes shut, fighting against the tears threatening to spill down her rosy cheeks. The terror in her chest was a living, breathing thing. Vivienne had promised her the world if she just kept quiet, but the lie was choking her.
Mara opened her eyes and stepped slightly to the side, peering around Adrian’s arm. She ignored the forty dangerous guests staring at her. She looked directly into Adrian’s deep, perceptive eyes.
"She promised I’d get my son back," Mara whispered.
The words emerged in a fragile, broken whisper, yet they struck the room with the force of a detonating bomb. Her chin trembled uncontrollably as she made the ultimate confession.
Adrian’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly. He slowly, methodically turned his gaze away from the housemaid, aiming the full, lethal force of his attention toward Vivienne.

Vivienne’s reassuring smile completely disappeared. The color drained entirely from her fair, rosy face, leaving her looking like a wax statue. The hand wearing the massive engagement ring froze rigidly against the mahogany table. Her mouth opened, gasping for air, but absolutely no answer came.
Every single guest in the luminous room remained dead silent, entirely paralyzed as they watched the mafia king realize that his fiancée had kidnapped a child to blackmail a servant. The golden light offered no sanctuary as the reckoning arrived.
