Chapter 2

The soft, elegant warmth of the chandelier light felt suddenly oppressive, pressing down on the grand dining hall like a physical weight. Adrian Vale did not offer his fiancée the reassuring smile she was desperately searching for. In his world, a hesitation was a confession, and a warning glance was a threat. He followed Vivienne’s sharp look across the table, watching it land like a physical blow against the housemaid.

Slowly, methodically, Adrian turned his broad shoulders. He looked away from Vivienne entirely and focused his cold, perceptive eyes directly into Mara’s.

"Mara," Adrian said.

His deep, low voice cut through the ambient noise of the engagement dinner with the precision of a scalpel. He did not raise his volume, yet the sheer, commanding authority in his tone caused an immediate, rippling effect.

The clinking of silverware ceased instantly. The low hum of forty different conversations died in the throats of the elite guests. Every single person sitting beneath the golden glow stopped eating, stopped speaking, and turned their heads toward the head of the table.

Adrian remained standing beside his chair. He did not step toward her. He did not reach out with his heavily tattooed hands to pull her hand away from her chest. He simply waited, letting the terrifying gravity of his presence do the work.

"Why are you covering it?" Adrian asked.

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an absolute, uncompromising truth.

Mara held Adrian’s gaze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She was terrified of the beautiful, ruthless woman sitting across the table, but defying Adrian Vale was a suicide mission. The sheer, overwhelming power radiating from his masculine frame paralyzed her.

Her inner brows lifted in a helpless, devastating expression of vulnerability. The polished, elegant facade of the housemaid cracked entirely. Hot, silent tears gathered along her lower eyelids, making her expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the warm light.

She took a ragged, shallow breath, forcing the words past the lump of pure terror in her throat.

"She listens through it," Mara whispered.

Her voice was thin, fragile, and deeply frightened, yet it carried clearly in the dead-silent room. As she spoke the devastating words, Mara slowly lowered her hand just enough to reveal the heavy, ornate brooch pinned to her uniform. Her fingers, however, remained curled tightly against her white apron, bracing for the inevitable violence she was certain would follow her confession.

Across the table, Vivienne’s perfectly sculpted face went completely rigid. The diamond earrings seemed to freeze mid-swing. She stared at the housemaid, absolute shock warring with pure, unadulterated hatred in her eyes.

Adrian did not look at Vivienne. He stared at the ornate brooch resting against the crisp black fabric of Mara’s uniform. A listening device. Planted on a servant inside his own home, orchestrated by the woman he had asked to marry him. The betrayal was intimate, calculated, and entirely unforgivable.

The guests, hardened criminals and their wives, held their breath, waiting for the explosion. They knew Adrian Vale. They knew the extreme, brutal violence he was capable of unleashing. But Adrian remained perfectly still, the silence stretching into an eternity as he processed the magnitude of his fiancée's treachery.
