Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Vale estate hung like suspended constellations, casting a luminous, airy warmth over the grand dining hall. It was an evening of absolute elegance, the bright, soft colors of the room enhancing the flush of rosy skin and the gleam of fine American silver. Beneath the gentle golden glow, forty of the city’s most dangerous and influential elites sat around an impossibly long mahogany table, celebrating the engagement of their king.

At forty-two, Adrian Vale was a man who commanded the room not through volume, but through sheer, terrifying gravity. He possessed the striking, classic beauty of a movie star, yet every plane of his angular face—the high-bridged nose, the sharply defined jawline shadowed by immaculate, extremely short stubble—spoke of deep, uncompromising masculinity. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back, save for a few loose strands that fell carelessly over his forehead. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that armored his powerful shoulders. The artistic tattoos on his hands, refined with generous negative space, flexed as he rested his fingers on the table. The small tattoo visible above his collar was the only outward sign of the violence he orchestrated.

Opposite him sat Vivienne Shaw, his fiancée. At thirty-three, she was the picture of high-society perfection. Her sculpted satin evening gown draped flawlessly over her fair skin, her diamond earrings catching the light as she laughed at a joke made by an underboss. Her engagement ring, a massive, flawless stone, glinted as she rested her hand on the table. Her public smile was affectionate, polished, and entirely artificial.

Moving silently through the bright, crowded room was Mara Hayes. At twenty-eight, the housemaid was a vision of understated grace, her softly oval face and delicate cheekbones framed by hair gathered into a neat, low twist. Her sophisticated black maid dress—slim-fitted with a cinched waist and short A-line skirt—was immaculate, complete with a crisp white collar, cuffs, and a neatly tied white apron. Pinned conspicuously to the bodice of her uniform was an ornate, heavy brooch that looked entirely too expensive for a servant.

Mara approached the head of the table, holding a crystal pitcher. The heavy clinking of silverware and the low hum of American-accented conversation filled the air. She carefully refilled Adrian’s water glass, her movements precise and elegant.

As she finished pouring and set the pitcher down on a nearby side table, Mara turned back toward Adrian. Her expressive brows drew together, her lips parting as though she were about to speak. The breath caught in her throat.

Her eyes darted across the table and collided with Vivienne’s.

Instantly, Mara’s hand flew to her chest, her fingers curling protectively over the ornate brooch pinned to her dress.

Adrian, who missed absolutely nothing, noticed the sudden, sharp intake of her unfinished breath. His cold, perceptive eyes tracked the movement of her slender hand and the sudden, paralyzing tension locking her fingers against her uniform. He did not move. He simply watched her, his mind calculating the anomaly.

Vivienne, realizing the mafia boss had caught the strange interaction, leaned forward slightly. She met Adrian’s eyes and let out a soft, dismissive laugh that rang clear in the elegant warmth of the room.

"She’s embarrassed by my little gift," Vivienne said, her voice dripping with casual affection. Her mouth maintained a perfect, bright smile, but her eyes were frantic, searching the sharp angles of Adrian’s expression for immediate agreement.

After speaking, Vivienne shifted her gaze. She shot Mara a brief, terrifying warning glance—a look promising absolute ruin if the maid dared to contradict her.

Mara swallowed hard, her hand still pressing the heavy brooch against her rapidly beating heart.
