Chapter 1

A crowded Christmas reception filled the Hawthorne mansion’s luxurious salon, vibrating with the low hum of expensive conversations and the clinking of crystal champagne flutes. Cascading crystal chandeliers flooded the entire space with warm golden light, casting an ethereal glow over the city's most dangerous elite. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras, their flames reflecting endlessly in the gilded mirrors that lined the walls. Polished marble floors gleamed beneath carved walnut furniture and burgundy velvet sofas. Evergreen garlands framed the grand fireplace, filling the air with the sharp, fresh scent of pine. In the corner, a towering Christmas tree sparkled violently with golden lights and heavy crimson ribbons.

Amidst the opulence, Clara Dawson felt like a ghost trapped in a nightmare. She was a gentle maid with delicate features and clear, expressive eyes, but tonight, she looked exhausted. Her black maid dress felt restrictive, her white collar and cuffs stiff against her fair, rosy skin. Her hair was noticeably disheveled from hours of relentless work, her white apron rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat crookedly atop her head. Most terrifying of all was the small pregnancy bump barely concealed beneath the folds of her apron.

She stood near a walnut console, trying to remain invisible, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You look dreadful, Clara," a smooth, venomous voice murmured near her ear.

Clara flinched. Veronica Shaw, Ronan’s fiancée, stood beside her. Veronica was a striking vision of aristocratic cruelty, draped in a breathtaking emerald satin gown that clung to her curves, diamond earrings flashing with every sharp movement of her head.

"I am fine, Miss Shaw. Just tired," Clara whispered, keeping her eyes downcast.

"Are you?" Veronica sneered quietly, ensuring none of the mafia bosses or their wives nearby could hear. "You need to take better care of yourself. After all, you have a delicate condition to manage. One that we agreed would remain our little secret, didn't we?"

Clara’s hand instinctively brushed against her apron, hovering over her small bump. "I haven't told anyone. I swear it."

"See that you don't," Veronica said smoothly. She turned to the walnut console, where a steaming porcelain cup and saucer rested. "In fact, I had the kitchen prepare something special for you. A tonic."

"I don't want it," Clara said, panic rising in her throat.

"It wasn't a request," Veronica commanded, her polished smile never wavering. She slid the porcelain cup and saucer across the smooth walnut surface toward Clara. "Drink. It's good for the baby."

Clara stared at the dark liquid, her fingers hovering trembling beside the saucer. She knew the woman standing beside her was a monster, a ruthless heiress who would stop at nothing to secure her place as the Hawthorne matriarch. The cup felt like a death sentence.
