Chapter 1

The opulent salon of the Whitmore estate was a masterpiece of holiday splendor, flooded entirely with a warm, golden light that radiated from magnificent, cascading crystal chandeliers. There was no muddy yellow tint to the illumination; it was a pure, cinematic glow that reflected flawlessly off the polished marble floors and the gilded mirrors lining the walls. Dozens of tall ivory candles flickered within ornate brass candelabras, casting shimmering highlights across the carved walnut furniture and the rich burgundy velvet sofas. A towering Christmas tree stood near the grand fireplace, sparkling brilliantly with golden fairy lights, crimson ribbons, and heirloom ornaments. Evergreen garlands wrapped tightly around the mantle, filling the air with the sharp, fresh scent of pine. Fifty elegantly dressed guests—a lethal mixture of syndicate capos, wealthy politicians, and elite socialites—mingled in the expansive room, their fair, rosy skin bathed in the elegant warmth of the reception.

At the center of the room stood Gideon Whitmore. At thirty-three, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling estate with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He possessed broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular jaw was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair, shadowed by extremely short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy family signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that caught the chandelier’s light. A small, delicate ink design peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The eastern supply lines have been secured for the winter, Gideon," murmured Marcus, a senior capo, keeping his American accent low to blend with the festive strings playing in the background.

"Are you absolutely certain the routes are clear of interference, Marcus?" Gideon asked. He spoke slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting through the ambient noise of the room with effortless authority.

"Completely certain, Boss. The rival families understand the cost of crossing you."

"Good. Ensure the harbor patrols are doubled tonight," Gideon commanded, his dark eyes scanning the room. "I want no surprises on Christmas Eve."

"Of course," Marcus nodded respectfully, raising his crystal glass. "To a peaceful holiday, Mr. Whitmore."

Gideon did not raise his glass immediately. He turned his signet ring thoughtfully around his finger. He was a man who survived by analyzing every minute detail of his environment, and while the surface of the reception was immaculate, a heavy, suffocating tension seemed to linger near the service corridors. His gaze drifted across the crowded salon, looking past the laughing guests and the towering Christmas tree, searching for the source of the subtle disruption.
