Chapter 7

The twenty minutes it took for the tactical team to return to the estate felt like an eternity. Mara paced the length of Adrian’s study, her elegant black maid dress swishing softly with every step. The bright, luminous light of the room offered no comfort to her racing heart.

Adrian remained seated at his desk, silently reviewing security feeds on his monitor, but his perceptive eyes frequently tracked her movements. He understood her anxiety perfectly.

Finally, the heavy oak doors of the study swung open.

Marcus stepped into the room, his tactical gear dusted with dirt from the mountain lodge. Behind him, looking incredibly small but remarkably calm, was a seven-year-old boy. He had fair, rosy skin and dark hair that mirrored his mother's.

"Leo!" Mara screamed, the sound tearing from her throat in a raw, primal burst of pure love.

She sprinted across the room, dropping to her knees on the hardwood floor. She caught the boy as he ran to her, wrapping her arms around his small body and burying her face in his neck. She rocked him back and forth, weeping openly, entirely unconcerned with her polished, sophisticated appearance.

"I missed you, Mommy," Leo said, his young American accent quiet and brave. "The men locked me in a room, but I wasn't scared."

"I know, baby. I know," Mara sobbed, kissing his face repeatedly. "I am so sorry. Mommy is never going to let you go again."

Adrian stood up slowly from his desk, watching the reunion with a profound, quiet intensity. He was a widower, a man who had built his empire on the ashes of his own personal tragedies. Watching a family put back together by his own hand was a rare, powerful narcotic.

Marcus stepped closer to the desk, speaking in a low, professional murmur. "The men holding him were Shaw family loyalists, Boss. They didn't surrender. We left them in the woods."

"Good," Adrian replied simply. "Secure the perimeter. The Shaw family will know their men are dead by morning. I want this estate locked down tighter than a vault."

"Understood," Marcus nodded, quickly exiting the study to execute the orders.

Mara finally pulled back from her son, wiping her tear-streaked face. She stood up, keeping one hand firmly on Leo's shoulder, and turned to face the mafia boss.

"Mr. Vale," Mara said, her voice shaking with overwhelming gratitude. "I don't know how I can ever repay you for this."

Adrian looked at the small boy, then back to the stunningly beautiful woman. "You have nothing to repay, Mara. The debt was mine. Vivienne brought this danger into my home, and I am rectifying the mistake."

He walked out from behind his desk, his towering, masculine frame intimidating but no longer terrifying to the young mother.

"Come," Adrian instructed gently. "It is late, and Leo needs to sleep. I will show you to your new quarters."

He led them out of the study and up the grand, sweeping staircase. The mansion was quiet now, the chaotic energy of the ruined engagement dinner completely scrubbed away by his heavily armed staff. The bright, warm lighting illuminated their path to the east wing.

Adrian pushed open the double doors of a massive, opulent guest suite. It was decorated in soft, elegant tones, far superior to the cramped servant quarters Mara had been living in.

"This is yours," Adrian said, standing in the doorway. "Food and new clothing for Leo will be delivered in the morning. Rest tonight. We will discuss your new responsibilities tomorrow."

"Thank you, Adrian," Mara whispered softly, using his first name for the first time. The gently curved lips formed a genuine, breathtaking smile.

Adrian’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly. He nodded once, a sharp, formal movement, and turned to walk back down the corridor, leaving the mother and son in safety. The war with the Shaw family was looming, but as Adrian walked through his fortress, he felt a strange, terrifying sense of peace.
