Chapter 9

Laura stood by the window, gently rocking Emma in her arms until the exhausted three-year-old finally drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep. The bruising on the child's fair, rosy cheek was a stark, enraging reminder of the betrayal that had occurred under her own roof. Laura carefully carried Emma into the adjoining bedroom, laying her gently on the massive, plush mattress. She pulled a thick, silk comforter over her daughter, pressing one last, lingering kiss to her forehead before quietly stepping out and pulling the door mostly shut.
The silence of the penthouse was suddenly broken by the sharp, urgent buzzing of the encrypted, secure phone resting on her mahogany desk.
Laura’s eyes narrowed. She walked over to the desk, her tailored black three-piece suit moving with fluid grace. She picked up the phone, noting the caller ID. It was Silas, the underboss she had just promoted to manage the southern ports.
"Speak," Laura commanded, her voice dropping instantly back into the cold, raspy, authoritative tone of the Mafia Boss.
"Boss," Silas said, his American accent breathless and laced with genuine panic. "We have a massive problem at the southern docks. It’s worse than we thought."
"What happened?" Laura demanded, her jaw tightening.
"When we went to secure Adrian's territory, we found the warehouses completely empty," Silas reported, the fear evident in his voice. "He didn't just mismanage the routes, Laura. He sold us out. The weapons cache, the incoming shipments... everything is gone. He cleared it all out yesterday."
"Who did he sell it to?" Laura asked, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone. The bright, cinematic lighting of the office felt suddenly cold and sterile.
"The Petrov syndicate," Silas revealed. "We intercepted a communication from one of the dockworkers. Adrian brokered a deal with the Petrovs a week ago. He sold them our entire southern arsenal in exchange for safe passage and a seat at their table."
Laura closed her eyes, a dark, terrifying realization washing over her. The slap in the ballroom, the cruel insults directed at Emma... it hadn't just been a spontaneous outburst of jealousy. It had been a calculated distraction. Adrian and Megan knew their treason was about to be discovered. They needed to provoke a public incident, a reason to be exiled, so they could flee to the protection of a rival family before Laura realized they had stolen her weapons.
"They played us," Laura whispered, her voice a deadly, freezing void.
"Boss, the Petrovs are heavily armed now," Silas warned. "If they have our shipments, they outgun us two to one on the southern border. They are going to make a move on the city."
"They will not take my city," Laura stated, opening her eyes. The cold, intimidating, sharp gaze returned with apocalyptic intensity. "Silas. Gather every single soldier we have. Empty the northern armories. I want the entire syndicate on a war footing within the hour."
"We are going to war tonight?" Silas asked, shocked by the rapid escalation.
"We are going to eradicate them," Laura corrected, her voice measured, cold, and unspeakably dangerous. "I want Adrian and Megan found. I want them brought back to me alive. And I want every single Petrov soldier who stands in your way burned to the ground."
"Understood, Boss," Silas confirmed before the line went dead.

Laura slowly lowered the phone. She looked out the massive windows at the glittering city skyline. The internal family drama was over, but a massive, bloody war for control of the entire East Coast had just been ignited.
She reached down and opened the bottom drawer of her desk. She bypassed the paperwork and pulled out a heavy, matte-black suppressed pistol. She checked the magazine with a sharp, metallic clack, her fair, rosy skin contrasting with the dark weapon.
