Chapter 10

The heavy, metallic clack of the pistol echoed sharply in the quiet penthouse suite. Laura slipped the weapon smoothly into a concealed shoulder holster beneath her tailored black suit jacket. She adjusted her lapels, her family signet ring catching the bright, cinematic light of the room. Her transformation was complete; the elegant mother had fully receded, leaving only the ruthless, untouchable warlord of the Moretti empire.

A heavy knock sounded at the double doors of the suite.

"Enter," Laura commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority.

Marcus, the massive bodyguard, stepped into the room, his face grim and serious. He wore tactical gear over his dark suit, an automatic rifle slung comfortably across his broad chest.

"Boss," Marcus reported, his American accent crisp and professional. "The strike teams are assembled in the courtyard. Silas has deployed the northern lieutenants to flank the Petrov border. We are awaiting your final orders."

"Is the perimeter of this estate fully secured?" Laura asked, her cold eyes locking onto his.

"Airtight," Marcus assured her. "I have thirty men on the walls, and the automated defense grids are active. No one is getting within a mile of this house without us knowing."

"Good," Laura said softly. She walked toward the slightly ajar door of the bedroom, looking in at Emma. The three-year-old was sleeping soundly, clutching the edge of the silk comforter, entirely unaware that a massive war was about to explode across the city to protect her future.

Laura turned back to Marcus, her expression hardening into an impenetrable mask of stone.

"You remain here," Laura instructed. "You stand outside that bedroom door. If anyone who is not me attempts to enter this suite, you kill them. Do you understand?"

"With my life, Boss," Marcus swore, bowing his head respectfully.

"The Petrovs thought they were clever," Laura said, walking past him toward the suite doors. "They thought buying a traitor would give them the keys to my kingdom. They are about to learn that I do not play defense."

"Are you leading the assault personally, Miss Moretti?" Marcus asked, slightly surprised.

"I am," Laura confirmed, stopping in the threshold. "Adrian and Megan believe they have found sanctuary. I am going to show them that there is nowhere on this earth they can hide from me."

Laura stepped out into the hallway, her sharp heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. She descended the grand, carpeted staircase, the same staircase she had ascended as a young woman taking over a fractured empire. Now, she was marching toward a bloodbath.

When she reached the grand foyer, dozens of heavily armed, fair-skinned white American capos and soldiers were waiting for her. They stood in perfectly disciplined silence, their eyes fixed on their young, terrifyingly powerful Boss.

"Tonight," Laura said, her deep, elegant voice carrying effortlessly across the vast space, "we purge the poison from our city. Leave no survivors."

The men nodded in grim unison, racking their weapons.

Laura walked through the heavy mahogany front doors, stepping out into the cool, crisp night air. A fleet of armored black SUVs sat idling in the driveway, their engines purring like caged beasts. She climbed into the back of the lead vehicle, the heavy armored door slamming shut with a definitive, metallic thud.

As the convoy sped away from the estate, hurtling toward the southern borders and the waiting Petrov army, Laura stared out the tinted window. The betrayal of her family had been a deep, agonizing wound, but it had also been a necessary catalyst. The war for the city had begun, and the undisputed queen of the underworld was ready to bathe the streets in blood.
