Chapter 6

The silence was profound, heavy, and suffocating. The bright, cinematic natural light offered no warmth to the terrified onlookers. The elite white American guests, the seasoned capos, and the heavily armed bodyguards stood paralyzed, their fair and rosy faces pale with shock. They were witnessing a tectonic shift in the foundation of the Moretti family.

Laura slowly walked toward the ruined family-history display. Her sharp heels clicked rhythmically against the floor, stepping deliberately over a fallen acrylic frame containing the portrait of her late grandfather. She stopped a few feet from where Megan lay trapped beneath the debris of their shared ancestry.

Megan pushed a heavy, framed photograph off her chest, gasping for breath. Her luxurious formal gown was torn, her pearl necklace broken, the beads scattering across the carpet. She looked up at her younger sister-in-law, and for the first time in her life, her face became entirely, genuinely frightened.

"Laura... please," Megan whimpered, her voice a pathetic, trembling shadow of her former arrogance. "I... I didn't mean it. It was a mistake."

Laura looked down at her. Her cold, sharp, intimidating eyes were completely devoid of human empathy. She did not raise her voice. She spoke with a slow, measured cadence that sent chills down the spines of the hardened criminals watching the scene unfold.

"My daughter. Is my family," Laura said, her tone dead calm. The absolute certainty in her voice resonated with lethal intent. She paused, her gaze piercing through the older woman. "You are not. Not anymore."

Megan’s eyes widened in sheer horror. Being stripped of the family name was a death sentence in their world. It meant losing all protection, all wealth, and all status.

"You can't do this!" Megan cried out, scrambling desperately to free her legs from the collapsed display. "I am a Moretti! Adrian is a senior associate! The Commission will not allow you to banish us over a child!"

"The Commission," Laura replied softly, turning her head slightly to address the entire ballroom, "does not run my house."

She looked out over the sea of faces. Her capos, the men who controlled the streets, the ports, and the vast illegal enterprises of the city, were watching her every move.

"Thomas. Vincenzo," Laura commanded, her American accent cutting through the quiet.

Two massive, broad-shouldered men in dark suits stepped forward instantly from the crowd. "Yes, Boss," they answered in unison, bowing their heads respectfully.

"Strip them of their jewelry," Laura ordered, pointing a manicured finger toward Megan and the unconscious Adrian. "Take their phones. Take their keys. They leave this estate tonight with exactly what they are wearing. Nothing more."

"Laura, no! Please!" Megan shrieked hysterically as Thomas hauled her roughly to her feet, violently tearing the diamond rings from her fingers. "Where will we go? We have no cash! You are signing our death warrants! Our enemies will hunt us down by sunrise!"

"Then I suggest you run very fast," Laura said coldly, watching as Vincenzo dragged the bleeding, limp body of Adrian away from the ruined silver service station.

"You are a monster!" Megan screamed, thrashing against Thomas's iron grip, her pearls spilling onto the carpet. "You are destroying this family for a bastard stray!"

"Take her to the front gates," Laura instructed, entirely unfazed by the insults. "If she utters another word, break her jaw. If I see either of them within city limits after tonight, shoot them on sight."

The bodyguards dragged the screaming, sobbing woman out of the ballroom, her cries echoing down the long, immaculate corridors until the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut. The traitors were gone, but the atmosphere in the ballroom remained thick with unspoken tension. Laura turned her cold eyes back to the remaining crowd. The true test of her leadership was about to begin.
