Chapter 2

The ballroom was meticulously arranged to showcase the history and absolute dominance of the Moretti family. Along the far wall stood a long silver service station, stacked high with gleaming serving domes, heavy silver trays, perfectly folded linen napkins, and woven utensil baskets. Just a few feet away stood a magnificent, freestanding family-history display. It was a towering structure filled with lightweight acrylic photo frames and beautifully engraved name plaques, chronicling generations of Moretti leaders. The bright, cinematic lighting caught the edge of every acrylic frame, creating a halo effect around the photographs of fair-skinned, rosy-cheeked ancestors.
Emma stood on her tiptoes, her small flats lifting off the plush carpet as she reached for her dinner plate beside the main family table. She was hungry, and the lavish spread of food smelled intoxicating. Her American accent was barely a whisper as she hummed a happy little tune, completely oblivious to the impending danger.
"I think I want the chicken," Emma said softly to herself, her fingers brushing the edge of the fine china plate.
"Don't you dare touch that," a sharp, venomous voice hissed from behind her.
Emma turned her head, her bright eyes widening in confusion as Megan suddenly loomed over her. The older woman's luxurious formal gown rustled aggressively. Before the three-year-old could even register the anger on her aunt's face, Megan raised her ring-adorned hand. With a sudden, terrifying burst of violence, Megan slapped the little girl hard across the cheek.
The sound of the strike was a sharp, sickening crack that echoed over the low murmur of the ballroom.
The sheer force of the blow lifted the tiny girl off her feet. Emma was thrown backward, dropping heavily onto the thick carpet. Her elegant child’s banquet dress tangled around her legs, and a profound, stunned silence overtook her for a fraction of a second before the sheer pain registered.
Megan did not flinch. She leaned over the fallen child and viciously snatched away the china dinner plate, holding it away from the weeping girl. Her fair skin was flushed with a terrifying, triumphant cruelty.
"Adopted children don’t eat at the family table," Megan stated coldly, her voice projecting with absolute, undeniable malice. "You are not a Moretti. You are nothing but a charity case. Learn your place."
"Aunt Megan, please!" Emma sobbed, her tiny body curling into a defensive ball on the floor. "I was just hungry!"
"Do not call me your aunt," Megan snapped, her pearl jewelry rattling as she pointed a manicured finger at the weeping toddler. "You share no blood with us. You are a stain on this family's pristine history."
The surrounding guests, bodyguards, and capos froze. The conversations in the immediate vicinity died instantly, replaced by a heavy, suffocating tension. Striking a child was a massive violation of the unwritten rules of their society, but striking the adopted daughter of the Mafia boss was an act of suicidal treason.
Adrian stepped up beside his wife, adjusting his expensive tailored suit. He looked down at the crying three-year-old with a mixture of disdain and nervous apprehension. "Megan, perhaps that was too public. People are starting to stare."
"Let them stare, Adrian," Megan scoffed, her American accent loud and unyielding. "Someone had to remind this little brat that wearing expensive clothes does not change the fact that she was pulled from a gutter. Laura is entirely delusional if she thinks the Commission will ever recognize this stray as a legitimate heir."

"You are right, of course," Adrian agreed, his polished leather shoes shifting uneasily on the carpet. "But Laura is highly unpredictable when it comes to the girl. We need to be prepared for the fallout."
"I welcome the fallout," Megan sneered, clutching the stolen dinner plate. "It is time this family stopped pretending."
