Chapter 8

The private penthouse suite was bathed in the same bright, natural, cinematic light as the rest of the estate, but the atmosphere here was infinitely softer. The walls were lined with rich mahogany bookshelves, and plush, cream-colored sofas rested on thick, expensive rugs.
Laura stepped into the room, leaving the door slightly ajar.
Marcus, the massive bodyguard, was sitting awkwardly on the edge of a delicate velvet chair. Three-year-old Emma was curled up into a tiny ball on the large sofa, clutching a soft, silk throw pillow against her chest. Her elegant child’s banquet dress was slightly rumpled, and her fair, rosy cheeks were stained with dried tears.
When Emma heard the click of Laura’s heels, she peaked over the edge of the pillow.
"Mommy!" Emma cried out, dropping the pillow and scrambling off the sofa.
Laura crossed the room in three long strides, dropping to her knees on the plush rug. She caught Emma in her arms, pulling the little girl into a fierce, desperate embrace. Laura buried her face in Emma’s soft hair, inhaling the sweet, innocent scent of her child, letting it ground her after the extreme violence she had just committed.
"I am here, my love," Laura whispered, her voice cracking slightly, shedding the cold, intimidating Mafia Boss persona entirely. "Mommy is right here."
"Did the mean lady go away?" Emma asked, her sweet American accent muffled against Laura’s tailored black suit jacket.
"Yes," Laura promised, pulling back slightly to look into Emma's bright blue eyes. She reached up with her strong, capable hands and gently wiped a fresh tear from the little girl's bruised cheek. "She went very, very far away. And she is never going to come back to this house ever again."
"She said I wasn't yours," Emma sniffled, her lower lip trembling violently as the cruel words echoed in her small mind. "She said I was a stray."
Laura’s heart shattered. She reached up, gently holding Emma's face between her hands. She looked directly into her daughter's eyes with absolute, unwavering intensity.
"Listen to me, Emma," Laura said softly, her voice carrying a profound, undeniable truth. "Some people are family because they look alike. But the strongest families, the most powerful families, are the ones who choose each other. The day I found you, I chose you. You are my daughter. You are a Moretti. And you are the most important person in my entire world."
"Really?" Emma asked, her eyes searching Laura’s face for reassurance.
"I swear it on my life," Laura vowed, pressing a tender kiss to Emma’s forehead. "You own my heart, little bird. And one day, you will own this entire empire. Do not let anyone ever make you feel small."
Emma let out a long, shuddering sigh, the tension finally leaving her tiny body. She wrapped her arms tightly around Laura’s neck, resting her head on her shoulder. "I love you, Mommy."
"I love you too, Emma," Laura murmured, holding her tightly.
She looked up, her cold, sharp eyes meeting Marcus’s gaze over the child's shoulder.
"Marcus," Laura said quietly. "Have the kitchen send up some warm milk and honey. And ensure the perimeter security is doubled tonight. Megan and Adrian have friends in the rival syndicates. I want no surprises."

"Yes, Boss. Right away," Marcus nodded, quickly exiting the suite to relay the orders.
Laura stood up, lifting Emma effortlessly into her arms. She carried her daughter toward the massive, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling city below. The cinematic lighting caught the reflection of the young, powerful mother and her child in the glass. The internal threat had been neutralized, but Laura knew that the display of violence today would send shockwaves through the entire criminal underworld.
