Chapter 3

The sharp, echoing crack of the slap had carried across the vast expanse of the ballroom. Laura Moretti, who had been deep in conversation with her top capos, abruptly stopped speaking. Her cold, sharp, intimidating eyes snapped toward the main family table. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the scene with painful clarity: her sister-in-law standing triumphantly with a dinner plate, and her three-year-old daughter crumpled on the floor.
Laura did not scream. She did not curse. The complete, terrifying stillness that washed over her deeply elegant features was far more dangerous than any outward display of rage.
"Excuse me," Laura said quietly to her men. Her American accent was dangerously smooth, utterly devoid of panic.
She turned and immediately crossed the ballroom. Her tailored black three-piece formal suit moved with a fluid, predatory grace. Her heels clicked against the marble and carpet in a rapid, relentless rhythm. The sea of white American adults, all adorned in their expensive gala attire, parted instantly to let her through. They recognized the lethal aura radiating from their Boss.
Laura reached the main family table in seconds. She completely ignored Megan and Adrian, dropping gracefully to her knees beside her daughter. She reached out, her strong, capable hands gently lifting Emma safely into her arms.
"I've got you, sweetheart. I am right here," Laura murmured, her voice softening into a tone of absolute, protective maternal love.
Emma clung desperately to Laura’s black suit jacket. The little girl pressed one small, trembling hand against her reddened, bruised cheek. Tears streamed continuously down her fair, rosy skin, staining the pristine fabric of Laura’s lapel.
"Mommy," Emma cried, her voice hitching with a devastating, heartbroken sob. She looked up into Laura's eyes, her innocence shattered by the cruelty of the woman standing above them. "Mommy… am I not really yours?"
The question struck Laura with the force of a bullet. The physical pain inflicted on the child was infuriating, but the psychological wound Megan had just delivered was unforgivable. Laura pulled Emma tighter against her chest, pressing a tender kiss to the uninjured side of the little girl's face.
"You are mine," Laura whispered fiercely, her voice vibrating with an unshakeable truth. "You are my heart, Emma. You are a Moretti. Never, ever let anyone tell you otherwise."
"But she said..." Emma hiccuped, burying her face into Laura's neck. "She said I don't belong at the table."
"She is wrong," Laura promised, her eyes darkening into a storm of violent intent. "And she is about to learn exactly who owns this table."
Laura stood up slowly, her tall, commanding presence casting a long shadow over the immediate area. She held Emma securely, her gaze sweeping over the crowd until she locked eyes with Marcus, her most trusted, heavily armed bodyguard.
"Marcus," Laura commanded, her American accent ringing out with absolute authority.
The large, fair-skinned man stepped forward instantly, his dark suit perfectly pressed. "Yes, Boss."
"Take Emma to the private suite," Laura ordered, gently handing the weeping three-year-old into the bodyguard's massive, protective arms. "Do not let anyone inside. Do not leave her side for a single second."
"I will guard her with my life, Miss Moretti," Marcus replied gravely, cradling the little girl carefully.
"I love you, Mommy," Emma whispered, looking back over the bodyguard's broad shoulder.

"I love you too, my beautiful girl," Laura said softly. "I will be up to see you very soon."
As Marcus carried the child away from the danger, Laura slowly turned her body to face Megan and Adrian. The maternal softness vanished from her face in an instant, replaced by the terrifying, cold calculation of a Mafia boss preparing to execute a traitor.
