Chapter 3

The tension in the brightly lit music room escalated from suffocating to highly combustible. Adrian remained kneeling, his large, artistic hands gently stroking Emma’s hair to soothe her frantic sobs. His sharp, calculating eyes never left Camille’s flushed, defensive face. He was a veteran Mafia Boss; he did not simply react to violence, he analyzed the root cause of it. A woman like Camille did not risk her lavish lifestyle and an engagement to a billionaire syndicate leader over a mere child's tantrum. She was hiding something catastrophic.

"What exactly," Adrian asked, his voice a low, vibrating hum that commanded the absolute attention of the room, "was my three-year-old daughter... eavesdropping on... that required... such a violent response?"

"Nothing!" Camille snapped entirely too quickly, her American accent cracking with sudden, undeniable panic. She unfolded her arms, her diamond engagement ring catching the cinematic sunlight as her hands fluttered nervously. "Just wedding plans! Adult conversations! She was lurking in the hallway like a little spy!"

Behind Camille, standing near the doorway with the other white American bodyguards, was Miles Caine. Miles was thirty-six years old, dressed in a sharp, professional dark suit, with a coiled earpiece resting behind his ear. His fair, rosy skin was suddenly pale.

As Camille’s panic visibly spiked, Miles instinctively took a half-step forward. He reached his hand out toward her back, a subconscious, protective gesture completely inappropriate for a hired bodyguard addressing the Boss's fiancée.

Adrian’s peripheral vision was flawless. He caught the movement instantly.

His cold, intimidating eyes flicked from Camille’s terrified face to Miles’s extended hand. The bright, natural light of the room illuminated every detail with high-definition clarity. There, resting on the fourth finger of Miles’s left hand, was a simple, polished gold wedding band.

The puzzle pieces snapped together in Adrian’s mind with lethal precision. The bodyguard’s protective reflex. Camille’s desperate, violent need to silence a toddler. The secret conversations in the hallway.

"Miles," Adrian said softly. The single word halted the bodyguard in his tracks, freezing the man entirely. "Step back... to the wall."

Miles swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously. He immediately pulled his hand back, lowering his head. "Yes, Mr. Bellucci."

Camille glanced over her shoulder at Miles, a look of sheer, unadulterated terror passing between them. It lasted less than a second, but to a man like Adrian, it was a screaming confession of guilt.

"You seem... nervous, Camille," Adrian noted, turning his gaze back to his fiancée. The moderately placed tattoos on his neck, visible just above his crisp collar, seemed to pulse as his jaw clenched. "You claim... she was listening... to wedding plans. Yet you look... as though you have seen... a ghost."

"I am just upset that you are coddling her instead of backing me up!" Camille shrieked, desperately trying to pivot the blame back onto Adrian’s parenting. "I am your future wife, Adrian! You should be demanding she apologize to me!"

"My daughter... owes you... absolutely nothing," Adrian whispered, the terrifying calm in his voice promising absolute ruin. He slowly began to rise to his feet, keeping Emma securely shielded against his chest. "But you... owe me... the truth."
