Chapter 17

Miles Caine was sitting on the concrete floor, his professional dark suit ruined. He didn't beg or cry like Camille. He had been a bodyguard in the syndicate; he knew exactly what awaited a traitor. He looked up as Adrian entered, his fair, rosy skin pale and drawn.
"I know I'm a dead man, Boss," Miles rasped, his voice resigned. "I just... I want to know if Camille made it out."
Adrian stared at the man, a cold, dark smirk touching the corners of his mouth. "Camille sold you out. Within ten seconds of being caught. She blamed the entire operation on you to save herself."
Miles closed his eyes, a profound, agonizing realization washing over him. He had betrayed the most powerful man in the country, risked his life, and destroyed his honor for a woman who felt absolutely nothing for him.
"I was a fool," Miles whispered.
"You were a liability," Adrian corrected smoothly. "You ate my food. You took my money. And you stood by while she crushed the fingers of a three-year-old child."
Adrian drew his suppressed sidearm with blinding speed. He didn't offer a dramatic speech or prolong the psychological torture. He fired a single, flawless shot, executing the traitor instantly.

"Clean this up," Adrian ordered Dante, holstering his weapon.
He walked out of the sub-basement, ascending the stairs back into the bright, cinematic light of his home. The rot had been completely excised. The estate was sanitized, the borders were secure, and the Bellucci empire was untouchable once more.
