Chapter 1

The private music room of the Bellucci estate was bathed in a brilliant, cinematic daylight that poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows. There was no trace of a dull or yellow tint; the light was crisp and pure, illuminating the vibrant, saturated colors of the floral concert displays that filled the corners of the room. The grand piano, polished to a mirror-like black finish, dominated the center of the space. Standing beside it was Camille Arden, a thirty-two-year-old woman possessing a flawless, fair, and rosy complexion. She wore an elegant, emerald-green formal dress that draped beautifully over her frame, her diamond engagement ring catching the bright sunlight. By all American standards of beauty, she was a breathtaking vision. But the elegant facade completely masked the horrific cruelty currently unfolding beneath her hands.

Three-year-old Emma Bellucci was trapped. The little girl, dressed in a delicate pastel party dress, a soft white cardigan, and tiny flats, was sobbing in pure agony. Her small, fair fingers were caught entirely beneath the heavy wooden fallboard of the grand piano.

Camille stood over the child, her high heels planted firmly on the pristine hardwood floor. Rather than lifting the heavy wooden lid, Camille was bearing down on it with both hands, using her body weight to crush the toddler’s fingers against the piano keys. A sickening, discordant cluster of notes echoed through the bright room as Emma desperately tried to pull her hand free, her rosy cheeks stained with hot, frantic tears.

"Please! It hurts! Let me go!" Emma wailed, her crisp American accent breaking into a hysterical, breathless sob. She kicked her little flats against the piano bench, terrified by the monster wearing her future stepmother's face.

Camille leaned down, her perfectly curled hair brushing against the polished wood of the instrument. She did not raise her voice. Instead, she leaned dangerously close to the crying three-year-old’s ear, her eyes devoid of any human warmth.

"Tell your father what you heard," Camille whispered cruelly, applying another fraction of an inch of pressure to the wooden fallboard, "and I close it harder. Do you understand me, you little brat? You keep your mouth completely shut."

"I promise! I promise! Make it stop!" Emma shrieked, the pain radiating through her small, fragile bones.

The heavy, mahogany doors of the music room suddenly swung open, the brass handles clicking sharply. Adrian Bellucci stepped over the threshold, his polished leather shoes making absolutely no sound. At thirty-nine, Adrian was handsome as a movie star, possessing a deeply masculine, distinctly Mafia Boss-like aura that immediately suffocated the room. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally slicked back, with a few loose strands falling perfectly over his forehead, creating a charming, romantic look that sharply contrasted with his cold, intimidating eyes.

Adrian’s gaze immediately locked onto the piano. The sight of his three-year-old daughter trapped beneath the fallboard, weeping in agony while his fiancée bore down on her hands, caused time to entirely stop.

"What... is happening... in here?" Adrian asked. His voice was incredibly low, the volume barely a whisper, yet the controlled pauses between his words carried a terrifying, lethal weight that instantly froze the blood in Camille’s veins.
