Chapter 8

The panic in Victoria’s voice was the ultimate confession. The bright cinematic lighting of the ballroom exposed the sheer, unadulterated terror radiating from her fair, rosy face. She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the pain in her cheek, desperate to reach the envelope in Adrian’s hand.
"Adrian, please, you have to listen to me!" Victoria cried, her American accent cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whine. "The Ashford family has always been loyal to you! We didn't know she was alive! We didn't send those men to her apartment!"
Adrian did not open the envelope. He simply stared at it for a long, heavy moment, processing the horrific implication of her frantic denial. Elena had been missing for over four years. Adrian had been told she died in a tragic accident overseas—a narrative heavily supported and confirmed by Richard Ashford’s intelligence network.
"I did not... say a word... about men at her apartment," Adrian whispered.
His voice was incredibly low, the volume barely a hum, yet the controlled, dangerous pauses between his words carried clearly across the silent ballroom.
Victoria froze. The color drained entirely from her lips. She realized her catastrophic mistake. In her blind panic, she had revealed knowledge of an attack that had just happened miles away—an attack she could only know about if she had orchestrated it.
"You knew she was alive," Adrian stated, his cold, intimidating eyes piercing straight through her soul. "You found her. And you sent your father's soldiers... to execute the mother of my children... on our wedding day."
"We did it to protect the alliance!" Victoria shrieked, tears of genuine defeat spilling over her cheeks. "She was a weakness, Adrian! A commoner! If the other syndicates knew you had a secret family, they would have used them against you! We were securing your empire!"
"You were securing... your crown," Adrian corrected coldly.
He looked down at his left hand. The heavy, polished gold wedding band, placed there during a private family ceremony the night before, gleamed in the bright light. It represented a lifetime commitment to the Ashford family. It represented millions in revenue, secured borders, and political power.
Adrian slowly reached over with his right hand. With a smooth, deliberate motion, he pulled the gold wedding ring off his finger.
The guests gasped, recognizing the ultimate, profound severity of the gesture.
Adrian held the ring for a fraction of a second before opening his fingers. He dropped it directly at Victoria’s feet. The heavy gold band hit the polished marble floor with a sharp, metallic clink. It bounced once, then rolled slowly until it rested against the toe of her ruined bridal shoe.
"You knew... what was inside this envelope," Adrian said, his voice quiet, lethal, and absolute. "Before I even opened it."
Victoria stared down at the discarded ring, her chest heaving. The reality of her total, irreversible ruin crashed down upon her. She had lost her husband, her power, and very likely her life.

"The wedding," Adrian declared, turning his back on her completely, "is over."
Victoria’s face became a mask of pure, paralyzed fright. She collapsed onto her knees beside the scattered gift boxes, weeping into her hands. The Ashford alliance was dead, and the Hale syndicate was about to go to war.
